I've had a good search around and maybe I'm not searching with the right terminology but I can't find any beginners guide to setting up domain names and hosted exchanges. Is there any around?
I'm kinda coming to grips with how it works still a lot of holes in my knowledge though.
Essentially I'd like to set up a domain name and hosted exchange for my in-laws and enable my father in-law to get 'push' email on his phone, but still be able to use outlook. The google apps solution sound rather easy but I'm not really sure how it all works in with outlook etc.
Anyways, a nice break down or 'how-to' form somebody who's recently done similar would be appreciated.

There are other options around besides hosted Exchange although their integration with outlook isn't as good. For example take a look at Smartermail which has far cheaper licensing costs than Exchange and activesync (push) email contacts/notes/calendar sync on smartphones too.

Pretty easy to do, high level overview:

1. Register the domain of your choice
2. Signup with BPOS, create the accounts you need, and read up on what the MX records of your domain have to be
3. Check the help files of your registrar, and figure out how to change the MX records of your domain

If we give you step by step instructions, you won't learn Smile

I've pretty much done just this last week. Purchased a domain, created a free Google Apps account. Proved to Google Apps that I owned the domain, set up Apps.
Configure MX records, up and running without too much difficulty.
Can definitely recommend Google Apps. Is free for up to 50 email addresses. Uses familiar gmail interface. Push email, very easy to set up, very easy to add additional accounts.

Cheers,
Joseph

Thanks Joseph, yes I'm thinking that maybe I should at least try the google apps route first. I'll familiarise myself with the process and test it out, and if it works ok, probably stick with it. Do you use Outlook at all for your email? How do you find it works? Does it do push email ok? I thought I remember reading that push email was only available with the the pay version, but perhaps that has changed with android etc.
