My client probably got what they paid for, but if you were to sign up to http://www.deltawebhosting.com/ you'd presume it would come with a recent version of mysql (for a word press site). Got this upon setup:

You cannot install because WordPress 3.1.3 requires MySQL version 4.1.2 or higher. You are running version 3.23.58.

Least they hadnt paid a year in advance....

Ouch. MySQL 3 is like running Windows NT as your domain server.

Yep - pretty old, and probably not that secure.

I did get version 2.0 of wordpress to work fine, but the backend interface isn't overly friendly, nor would it support my clients wordpress theme...

Wow that is scary. Wonder how out of date their patching and OS updates are?!

Looking at their website which doesn't look to have been updated since 2005 from the date on the footer, I wouldnt assume anything. I believe most web hosts usually provide at  MySQL 5 these days, but you do have to check their specs before signing up.

I thought that too... Though i've had better service from 000webhost.com (free and comes with SQL - 5.0.81). Will probably get them to sign up to Hostgator as these guys (Delta Webhosting) seem clueless when I ask anything technical.

Maybe look at an NZ web host. You get what you pay for at the end of the day.
