Has anyone else in the industry been caught up in the Distribute I.T hacking? [ http://www.smh.com.au/technology/security/4800-aussie-sites-evaporate-after-hack-20110621-1gd1h.html ]

I know of a handful of people (in NZ) including myself having trouble obtaining UDAI's back. From a nz registry or domain name commission point of view is there any other way of obtaining .nz UDAI's?

I know of some who have been requesting for a fortnight now to no avail directly with the registrar (Distribute I.T has been recently brought), as well as little assistance from the NZ Webhost (who I won't name as 90% of the time I think they're very good at their work [EDIT: Changed my mind])..

Yeah i bought a domain with Hosting Direct who use Distribute I.T and they have been anything but helpful.

Can't get my UDAI or the Nameservers changed for nearly 3 weeks now.

It is a real pain because i can't point the domain to my server and my clients aren't to pleased with it.

I'm not with HostingDirect, but 24/7 Hosting. I'd like to know how many NZ'ers are involved and unable to get anywhere.

24/7 are happy to change my nameservers etc, but really just wanting a UDAI and the exit door....

Hmm interesting, with Hosting Direct i have been given all the UDAI's for my domains apart from one which i purchased only 2 days before the hacking.

But i can't change and Name Servers at all.

Seems they have locked down all the domains that were purchased a week before the hack.

The one domain that i need is the one purchased a few days before the hack and i can't get UDAI or change Name Servers.

I have been in touch with Domain Name Commission after hosting direct failed to provide UDAI, they gave me details for Distribute I.T. Now they haven't even replied to my email so have contacted DNC again and will see what reply i get in the morning.

I've tried Distribute I.T / Netregistry numerous times via email to no avail.. Let me know (if you dont mind) the DNC response, not sure if me writing a letter myself similar to yours will really get me too far.

I will post here when i get a reply.

Not particually hopeful though, can't imagine they can actually do much.

And this is why I avoid such companies. I prefer to pay that bit more, host my own nameservers and just live life.

They should be able to help. Either that or try nzrs.net.nz. I have never heard of that sort of delay in getting the UDAI, as it must be provided within  a reasonable period of time, which I was told was a couple of days.

Good luck with the DNC, I had the misfortune of having to deal with them when someone falsely accused me of not handing over details for a domain which I sold... Prick is a GZ member too, I should never have sold the domain for a little as I did.

What I did learn is that the process can take up to two months and can cost you $1800 if the other party does not play ball, so don't bother unless you have no other option.

It also requires you to send in hard copies of documents etc to Wellington.

Just got a reply saying i should wait another 48 hours as they have recently been bought by NetRegistry and delays were likely.

So guess i will find out by Wednesday what is happening.

I think that is a different situation, as it sounds like an ownership issue. UDAI's should be easy to get, and registrars are required to provide them within a certain period of time. I believe waiting weeks to far too long.

Don't they have a control panel where you can automatically generate it, and it then gets sent to your email address?

Yes they do but it just returns an error code for doing anything with any of the domains.

It looks like HD use an API to Distribute IT which then does all the work.

Still haven't had a reply from them but have no had a reply from HD 3 weeks after my first request i have been given the UDAI and it looks like my nameservers have changed over as well.

Guess i will be spending this weekend moving everything from HD as i do not want to go through this again.

Looks to me as if net registry (who have bought Distribute.IT) are ignoring all requests but simply going through domains one at a time a resetting the UDAI and sending it out to customer.

If you are the registrant contact in the WHOIS details you can ask the DNC directly to provide you with the UDAI code for the domain.

There is no requirement to go through the Reseller/Registrar.
