Hi.

A talented developer in our IT team is struggling to find a local training course targeting his level. He is absolutely passionate about new technology and has recently been working a lot with HTML5 / JS / C# / EntityFramework / REST / SQL Server. Honestly, the terms are a bit foreign to me, but he creates some very slick and well received applications, which our customers love.

The local training courses tend to be targeted at the beginner, but he's well past that and wants something more advanced.

Could anyone suggest local (NZ) training courses that would be well suited?

Alternatively, I wondered if a site visit would be an option for him. He could visit another development house to swap stories and approaches.

Any suggestions?

Webstock every year in NZ is a good touch point.

With the dollar the way it is a trip to the U.S is a very realistic option as well.

Microsoft Tech Ed is on this month and usually has a ton of content aimed at all of those technologies. Thats probably worth a go. http://newzealand.msteched.com/

Apart from annual conferences (Webstock, TechEd etc) there aren't really any that I would recommend for that level.

We give our developers subscriptions to TekPub currently, tell them they can watch a few to several episodes every week in normal work hours any time they want (within reason).

Also there are a some other good alternatives to TekPub like Dimecasts:

I think it's more valuable for sys admins and network admins.

The developer content usually isn't that cutting edge or high level enough for any experienced developers, it also tends to push MS only tech rather than other options that are better for the job (imo).

Having been the last three years decided not to bother this year.
