Hi folks... I'm thinking of installing some tracking software on my laptop. I thought of Prey Project, but is there anything else people use that could be also interesting to look at?

I also know Symantec is currently running a beta for Norton Anti-Theft and thought of that - but it's beta...

You need one that is embeded in the BIOS, else once the HDD is wiped, how will it work?

Well, that would be ideal but not having an adequate BIOS, one of those software could well be the thing. I suspect most people would at least turn on the laptop once to make sure they are working and they can reformat... A honeypot non-password account could be used so people would at least login and even more information could be gathered.

Though I'd never connect it to the net before wiping. I've had a few customer laptops / PC's stolen, with Logmein installed, but none have ever been online again.
