Hello Im looking at setting up an IT business (Web design, dynamic websites etc), not sure what to do in regards to servers, Im used to having admin rights to everything so would prefer heading for a dedicated server but open to opinions,

Will have to be windows unless is running VMware which I can run windows server R2 on.

Would like to start with virtualisation, Hyper V VMWare, and at least two servers (one database and maybe version control + possibly build server (Team city most likley - may place this on a local server to save transfer time save server time) + a web server)

I suspect this is going to cost a bit, but am more concerned with the cost of the data centre - whats the typcial cost or a few 1U spaces in a data centre - best price. Have seen some expensive prices. Have had a look at some Hosting options and not sure what the control panels like hlem are like - whether I will have enough control to run whats needed (Scheduled tasks etc) though these are alot cheaper are they fast - example host and domain would be appreciated for this?

There are few second servers on Trademe Xeon 1U's though not an expert on the subject don't know whether these will be very useful for a large number of sites running on them - and perhaps some high demand sites (Later on)

I like the look of these, probably with an 8 core opteron -
Asus RS500A-E6/PS4 1U Rack-Mountable AMD G34 500W Server

Need to know if is worth getting the ECC Ram for the servers? If I purhcased them.

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

A typical 1U at a good datacenter will run about $200/month.

Good Data Center being? (Power, Internet connection etc) do you know of any cheaper options?

My advise would be to get a reseller account from a NZ hosting provider until you have enough websites to justify managing your own dedicated server.

Managing a dedicated server can be very time consuming and until you have enough clients to make it econimically viable I would not suggest getting one.

Another alternative would be to get a VPS as there the overheads for that is significantly lower.

Maxnet, ICONZ. 100Mb shared, power varies (never had an issue with the 1U we run at work).

I have not used any of the cheaper options, so can't comment on them.

The problem is most datacenters typically prefer you to have more than just 1u as its quite an overhead for them. You'll find you'll be paying 10x the price for bandwidth and rackspace per unit of whichever you buy versus someone who buys in larger quantities. PM'd

Cheers that looks like a good option, will have a look around at some prices?

There is quite a range of pricing.

For example $60 + GST for 1U at HostingDirect is the cheapest but of course sometimes you get what you pay for in terms of quality.

There are are quite a few options these days, eg: Iconz, Orcon, Maxnet, Unleash, HostingDirect, WebDrive, Datacom, Entradata and probably some I have forgotten.. plus loads of web development service companies have their own.

Hence the good in my statement. :)

We (at work) used to use Orcon for DR, but their service just wasn't on par. We've now started getting half-racks for $800/month, which works out a lot better per 1U (21U in a half rack).

Of course, all statements here are my own and don't have any binding relation to my employer. They're just anecdotal evidence.

Maxnet will happily sell you rack space per individual 1u in a shared rack. Any physical access would have to be supervised, however there are staff there 24/7 so it's no biggie. Pricing starts as low as $99/month.

Of course there are the multitude of decent VMware based Virtual Server options if you'd prefer to not have to invest upfront on hardware.

PMs Welcome ;)

/end of plug.
