I have been looking a getting a job for a little while now but holiday boredom is starting to set in and after scouring places like Trademe, Seek and SJS I still found nothing of use. It seems even Junior positions seem to want either a degree or relevant experience (hence 'infant' in thread subject) so it occurred to me to just ask the guys on GZ.

So what is the intern and infant job markets like for IT businesses currently?
Are IT businesses preferring a trusted degree and experience over taking a risk with younger people?
Am I better off trying to get a unrelated job at a Supermarket?

Obviously I am intending to study something IT related at Uni likely to be Software Engineering at Massey or Information Systems at Auckland.

That being said, I'm not necessarily advertising myself but I am on the North Shore heading into Y13 this year and can supply a CV.

Where to volunteer though? Most Im doing atm is the family IT go to person. I don't see certificates as being worth it or viable right now going into 7th form.

CAB is always looking for IT volunteers, depending on the place sometimes you can get stuck with some pretty mundane stuff. Other places you can get straight into server management and things like that.

In my 3rd year of UNI I volunteered for half a day each Friday at a IT company in Browns Bay, consisted mostly of playing table tennis and having free Friday lunch & beer, but got introduced to Linux, DNS records, Email hosting, Website testing.

Learnt more relevant stuff in those few afternoons than I did during my whole degree, serious!
