I have a QNAP TS112 NAS. I can remotely access the NAS over the internet using the Web File manager function of the QNAP.  However I would like to be able to access the NAS as a drive over the internet just as I do via the router with the on site computers.

What is the best way to do this, VPN?  Or is there another or better way to do it?

Currently the web file manager sends the file as a download to the computer I'm accessing the NAS with. I'd like to be able to open the file just as I do on site, make any changes and then close and save the file, without having to download the file then upload the updated version.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Here's a couple of options for you:
Obviously the VPN option is more secure :)

Thanks for the info.

Looked a webDav without too much success however since we seem to have a fixed IP address the way I see it WebDav is necessary.

I tried going on to the QNAP website a few days ago to check out the VPN option but couldn't get into the site for some reason. I figured VPN was probably the way to go but was trying to find out what other options there might be.

I'll have another look at the VPN option.

Thanks again.

Yeah, they launched a new site which didn't go down too well, so they've reverted it back now.

That would explain why I couldn't access it then.

Also my comment about WebDav in my last post should read that since it appears that we have a fixed IP address that WebDav is unnecessary.

I havent read the links that theEd gave you, but I would expect that you can install OpenVPN with ssh somehow too.
