Currently have 6 x 2 TB disks presented to a Win2003 x32 box.  The data will be copied to a new SAN with 5TB disks presented to a Win2008 server.

Using something like Robocopy or Richcopy, is there any difference or preference if the coying is initiated from the Win2003 or 2008 side?

Perhaps make sure both sides are on the same gigabit network, on the same network segment, no other traffic around, and make sure both cards support Jumbo Frames and are properly configured?

Run some tests before going for the large one - once you start you don't want to interrupt half way through it and lose time.

Doesn't really matter which side initiates from what I've seen.

I'd skip the jumbo frames if I were you, makes bugger all difference to gigabit ethernet (10gbe is a different story) and just makes life hard, not many environments are setup for it and if you get it wrong you'll have all sorts of fun and games.  Stick with the defaults which is probably an MTU of 1500.

When doing the copy make sure the 2003 and 2008 servers are part of the same domain and make sure you set the right options with Robocopy to copy over all the permissions and other ACL stuff.

Are you going to do a big bang migrate ?  Or do a bulk copy then incremental copies before you cut over ?
