It's ok, if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.

I think the whole thing comes down to a small detail: one of the slides say the programs costs US$20 million a year.

No way such a capability would cost only US$20 million a year. First it's underpriced. Second it's a government operation.

This tells me people didn't look at the slides with critical eyes...

It might still work depending on how you look at it. Governments are even better than corporations at making other people pay their bills. It might cost $200 million or more overall, but they could just make the majority of that cost be borne by the companies they force to comply with their information gathering demands.

Or that might only be a partial, narrowly focussed cost for one component.

Balancing against that 'price makes this wrong' argument is the new NSA datacentre. If they need a building that big, they're certainly slurping a lot of data from somewhere. After all, you can fit a petabyte in a living room sized space these days.

I guess the bottom line is that we will never know because they will never tell us.

Sure.

The thing is that we won't never know because they they will never tell us.

Oh, wait.

Pretty sure the $20mill thing has been debunked as creative Govt accounting, The programs using existing resources for storage, data mining and people from various three letter agencies so the only true cost is people and resources purchased specifically and solely for the purpose of PRISM

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

When I used to work for a large US company, we would occasionally get queries from local clients (or prospective clients) about the US Patriot Act.

"What if the US Government asks you to hand over my data?"

The answer that had to be given - We may have to comply. As a based US company they were bound by US law. If the US govt asked for any data under the Patriot Act, regardless of who the client was (even if none of the data was stored in the US, no business done in the US etc), technically the company may have had to hand it over. Tho I am sure this never became a reality.

Anyone actually seen this 'slideshow' or is this some type of media spin. I know that all these companies (also ISP's here) have agreement with Local and goverment agencies that under the right conditions they will release information to the goverment.

Also that is what this bill re-write is about as well. A update of an old bill that doesnt make much sense in the enviroment we're in now. It's about streamlining and making sure there is a system of checks and balances to get relevant information to authorities In the case someone is doing something untoward.

I'm not saying that it isn't possibile, just this really smells of media scare mogering

I wouldn't want to be in Edward Snowdon's shoes now. It doesn't matter how much or little of what he's disclosed is true. The fact he's exposed the USA's dirty spying tricks has marked him for silencing.

I would not be surprised if he has a fatal "accident" soon, or failing that, spends the rest of his life in an American prison after they kidnap him and take him back there.
