Not really a twist - It's been abundantly clear since the very first proposal of S92A that this was the only way it could be done since the ISPs are not required to snoop on and share customer traffic with rights holders.

It's good to have the clarification though because it will calm some of the people down tho want to get upset about the new law, but refuse to actually read it. :-)

What are Newsgroups classed as? Online File Lockers or P2P? I know that they don't work like P2P, more like a website.

Will Newsgroup binary downloads be snooped upon?

Bytesized, they block public trackers on the server but it works fine thru the VPN if there is something that you need from it.

Im going to see how it goes getting stuff down off the box on the snap internet free offpeak once that gets connected on saturday. Its not too bad on slingshot compared to how slow it is during the evening, but I expect more than 100kB/s sustained out of snap - hopefully several 100kB/s

They cant be. How can a third party snoop on your traffic without resorting to illegal acts of hacking?

Hacking isnt something you really want to get caught doing at the moment if you are a media company, look whats happened to those clowns in the UK and that wasnt even real hacking.

I'm sure the RIAA/MPAA will try and change the laws to suit themselves.

+1 for them working it out and provising timely digital content so people don't need to use Torrents etc.

When one can set a bittorrent client to download the segments of a video file in sequential order so that you can start watching immediately, are you then streaming or not? I can see this become quite fuzzy.

What about those apps that are front ends for torrent that have a player in them too, embed one of those on a webpage and it will look no different to youtube, but people are p2ping without knowing it. Huge idiocy to say that websites are not affected by this BS law.

Streaming. Isn't. Necessarily. Legal.

What this clarification has SOUGHT to do was point out that the only technological distribution method that will be covered by the new, streamlined infringement process is P2P (primarily bittorrent - possibly only bittorrent).

If you were to use bittorrent to download a copyrighted file, even if it looks like streaming, not only will the full weight of the existing law still apply, but the simpler enforcement procedures afforded the rights holders through the new ammendments will also be able to be used.
