I don't think we need to worry about Blizzard,Electronic Arts and CCP Games pulling their online game services from nz since they haven't said a word about it and if they were considering pulling their services from nz them we would have heard from them by now.

SaltyNZ: For the same reason that nobody quits NZ when any other kind of compliance cost goes up. As long as they make a profit, they stay. It's simple. And if you compare wht they charge here for the same service in the US -- often served OUT OF the US -- you KNOW they're making a big fat profit.

Could you provide a couple of examples where nobody quits nz when compliance costs go up?

They didn't quit NZ the last time corporate tax rates were raised.

Thanks for the example.

Ok, if you insist: company taxes were raised in 1985 and GST was introduced in 1986. Microsoft has been selling stuff in NZ since 1981. Are you happy now? They're NOT going to leave.

I was thanking you for the example!

And they probably pay next to NO tax in NZ, and GST is passed to the consumer.

And they are the consumer for quite a lot of stuff, for example, paper. Also, there is a compliance cost associated with passing on the GST to the consumer.

blakamin: This article by Juha Saarinen of all people, has the bit about complying with NZ law possibly breaking US laws.

And they already comply with requests from the US NSA and possibly the UK GCHQ.
And do you have a problem with Juha Saarinen who wrote said article?

While I'd like to think these companies are bluffing, I have a feeling they're not. And does NZ really want to find out the hard way?

The article Blakamin linked suggested the US and NZ enter a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty to make information sharing easier.

Well, when they're that good at wiggling out of costs, I'm confident they'll manage this time too.
