Haha this is the one and only idea Labour has ever had to boost business performance. Imagine if there was no facebook, the productivity in businesses would skyrocket.

I thought transfer pricing legislation was supposed to stop this sort of thing, and Inland Revenue and audit firms seem to be pretty good at detecting non compliance in that area. What exactly are these companies doing to legally deflate their taxable income?

How exactly does facebook make money in NZ? It's not like they're selling you anything.

Advertising, NZ businesses pay facebook to put adverts on their website. Not sre if businesses claim back the GST, probably not. I don't think facebook ads are particularly effective though, I know a business that spent a lot on it, and didn't get any business from it at all.

I would be all for Labour banning facebook, I can't stand the site myself and it is very much like the wild west. But I think it doesn't have that long to live, as kids are moving away from it since older people started joining, and using things like snapchat and twitter.

Agree 100%. Note that all parties favour recovering these taxes, as does Australia. Read article on Stuff (yes, I know) this morning. If Labour's fail of mentioning banning had not occurred, this thread would not exist, JK said along the lines "not mentioning any names"

If the government were on the game, they should setup an advertising campaign to discourage people from using companies that don't pay tax in NZ. It could highlight things like how our schools and health system are missing out to pull on the emotions. There are plenty of online companies that appear to be NZ ones with NZ domains etc, but aren't based here or paying any tax at all. That is one reason I think that nz domains should be only for NZers, like what they do in Oz.

No where did I say getting the likes of Facebook to pay more taxes was a bad idea, in fact it's a bloody good idea.

This sort of evasion has been going on well before the internet, with companies using various ruses to shift profits to avoid tax. If it was easy to stop it would have been done by now. There is an international working party on this right now and so far as I know New Zealand is participating.

My comment was to the dumb as s idea this guy suggested to get Facebook to pay more tax. It didn't deserve the oxygen needed to proclaim it.

Truth be known it was just a grandstanding stunt which never had any intention of making Facebook pay more tax. If they think the voting public will believe this sort of statement then the question needs to be asked; Are they suitable candidates to run the country?

If they're going to say something on an issue like this, at least be credible.

The old saying remains true; It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

The more government tries to tell business how they should operate, the more of them will go even further out of their way to funnel all their money out of NZ to avoid them. They only way they can stop companies exploiting the legal loopholes, is to close them, they dare not do this for fear of losing most of the larger corporations.
