I read that ChatGPT is based on knowledge up to 2021 but asking it who the recent winners of the us men’s tennis open it answered up to last year.

 

The latest GPT4o version is much more up to date, the previous GPT3 version was up to 2021 if I recall correctly.

The fact you can do that in the first place and customise your search criteria is evidence of what you're saying hasn't happened.

 

 

Google Search has got less useful as commonly used (without the use of advanced search queries), the underlying index has improved. The removal of the discussions and blog search feature a decade ago still irks me* (you can try and recreate it with some extensions or inurl: queries but it isn't as effective) and I wonder if it was a contributing factor in the decline of those categories and assisted the capture of content that once would have been publicly accessible but is now hoovered up into social media silos.
