Remember back in 2000/2001 when the then Labour Govt was auctioning off 3G 2100MHZ radio spectrum the Maoris demanded a free slice of this spectrum. The govt ignored their demands but gave them a 5% discount and $5million of seed money to Hautaki. That company is now called 2 degrees mobile.

Good thing the government ignored their whinging for more free stuff, then!

A free bite of the cherry every 20 or so years.

Which makes your statement that it hasn't deployed in urban areas incorrect. 3 sites in Wellington could cover alot of people depending on where, the same for Auckland.

Also a nice fat government issue cheque tends to help speed up thing. I'm not sure why your getting hung up on deployment times for the Vodafone/Telecom bid

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Quite simple.

Why use old technology like ADSL to roll out a fixed line network when fibre is future proofed.
Had the Kordia/Woosh bid been successful a LTE 4G network could have been rolled out now, not in three years time while you wait for a spectrum auction.

And having to duplicate what you have done in another three years when 700MHZ LTE spectrum becomes available, if you successfully bid for the spectrum . Seems a gigantic waste of money to me.

Thats upto Telecom/Vodafone to factor in. Regardless of what tech is used if the winner reaches the targets set in the RBI then who cares?

We're not in possession of all the facts here, Hell Telecom/Vodafone could make an offer on Kordia/Woosh spectrum after they win and deploy LTE that way or they could live upto the RBI targets with current spectrum and overbuild 700mhz LTE when they get it down the line.

Either way no matter who wins as long as the RBI targets are clear and the open-access done right and set in so much stone god himself couldn't change it then it doesn't matter who wins it

Who's going to bid on it? I mean really? You've got Woosh/Kodia/Telecom/Vodafone/Maoris that mainly bid. CallPlus got a chunk of national Wimax during that auction but not much has been done with it. When your talking about a decent chunk of prime spectrum and a national licence your talking big $$$

700mhz being so hotly contended overseas I doubt we will see the government doing a pure "Who's got the most money" auction and will hopefully look at the companies that have done things with previous spectrum auctions.

Who says LTE is even needed? With 168Mbps HSPA+ being demonstrated there is still plenty of life in the WCDMA standard yet using existing 900 and 2100 spectrum.

I can't answer for Vodafone NZ and what they will do when the 700mhz goes up for auction but I bet they will be right in there.

Nokia has also done a demo of 650mbps on 3G technology

Do you remember the WIMAX spectrum auction about three or so years ago when David Cunliffe was the COMMS minister at the time. Some of the spectrum was sold to overseas countries.

I can't answer for Vodafone NZ and what they will do when the 700mhz goes up for auction but I bet they will be right in there.
