Wow... "The data Telstra stored for the US government includes the actual content of emails, online messages and phone calls."

This is pretty crazy. It is not an unreasonable reach to assume that major NZ carriers do the same thing, especially given that we probably lack the potential bargaining power of Australia.

I wonder if we could get a word from any of the major carriers in NZ or even Southern Cross.

I'm pretty sure you'll find that a condition of landing a cable on US soil is that this happens. It might not be under the aegis of the local part owners; it could be US owners. It doesn't really change the outcome, but it does allow the local owners some distance & deniability from the operation.

I spoke to someone a couple of years ago who was involved in trying to build a new cable. Apparently there were quite a lot of meetings in the US filled with people in suits who never identified themselves or even said a word.

The internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. Unfortunately it cannot really interpret wholesale surveillance the same way because otherwise there'd be no cables left.

The NSA, CIA, GCSB are welcome to read my emails to my wife reminding her our cars to be booked for service or that my brother and sister in law are coming for dinner. They can do what they will with txt to my son asking how his exam went. I am certain it fulfils their day. I have more pressing concerns to get my colon in a clove hitch.

Spies have been amongst us for years I am sure they have well documented my conversations with my wife in the Koru lounge regarding the soup on offer or our pending journey. I am glad to have help them stay gainfully employed.

cannot use typewriters they are insecure they leave impressions on the carbon paper, ribbon and roller.also the keystrokes can be traced.

Pencil and edible paper is better.
