If NZ loses PHARMAC in order to be part of TPP, we will regret this.

As could National if it loses an election to an opposition promising to pull us out of the TPP. It isn't worth signing the country away just to sell more beef patties to McDonald's.

Article reporting various commentators who don't think the TPP is going anywhere.

The "profit motive" as a funding model for medical/pharmaceutical research is seriously flawed.  There's a fundamental belief that the "profit motive" will solve all problems - which it doesn't and won't.

Without doubt there are some very sincere people working in the industry, but at a corporate level, why cure or worse still prevent, when you can treat indefinitely? There is always going to be pressure on a for-profit company to develop drugs you have to take forever compared to drugs you take once.

That's one aspect.  Also there's no funding for research on treatments that can't be patented, no incentive to develop new drugs to counter resistance, and a focus on developing treatments only for those who can afford to pay - with no concern for "public health" from a national or global perspective.

There's also a lot of "luck" involved.  Develop a novel treatment for wrinkles or erectile dysfunction - and vast fortunes are made.  "Nearly" develop a cure for a cancer or malaria, and go out of business.

Anyway - why has this thread been shifted to "ICT Policies and Regulation"?  ICT policy is only a minor part of the TPP, despite these forums being "geek" orientated, the thread belongs in off-topic.

^ THIS. So much this. I fear the TPP enormously on many fronts, but the implications for health in NZ are frankly terrifying. There is zero chance Pharmac can survive under the TPP in its current form. Zero.
