I have noticed Gopher has registered a client's domain name as their own and is redirecting this to a page about the client, but under their own domain and framed with their branding.

The registrar is Domain Agent.

While the 2nd issue is (in my mind) dubious and indicates Gopher cares far more about pushing their own brand then their client's, the 1st issue looks downright unethical and dodgy.

Can someone point me to any relevant DNC regulations?

I would have to agree.

What also annoys me with the likes of Gopher is the way they pretend to have a listing for a company as part of a Google search when in fact all they have is the companies names in the database without any useful info.

From what I remember this is correct. The owner should be listed as the registrant.

In my business we operate with the following policy -

1. New registrations only in the client's personal or business name
2. For inward transfers - I check the registrant matches their personal or business name
3. No anonymous domains or misleading information permitted

I believe NZ domains should always by registered in the name of the registrant (eg the company that purchased it), and not in the name of a third party, as per their documents at www.dnc.org.nz . However I believe that some companies do buy domains and rent them out, and I think that is legit.

But if you have any concerns or questions, you should contact the domain name commissioner at www.dnc.org.nz
