Following the 'borrowing' of my car, I'm quite keen to know where it is when it's not where it should be.

I have a u8150 spare which I'm thinking I could wire in under the dash so it's always got power.

What I'm keen to hear from others is what's the best software to use and what phone service should I put it on?

Cerberus would be the best software to install on your phone.

It only phones home when you tell it to via the web so any cheap data plan would do.

Can anyone suggest a cheaper data than paying $20 a month for a 500mb data pack?

What sort of budget is realistic to make this idea happen?

The car spends most of it's time sitting within wifi range, so surely it would never use much data?

It will only use data when you tell it to. You'd probably use no more than a couple MB per month if you have everything disabled but Cerberus.

If it's under the car/hood it may not get a good GPS fix. And if you leave it permanently sucking energy the car battery may go flat in a couple of days...

Standalone GPS/GSM boxes are about US$40 now, and are mostly problem free unless you are on 2degrees and leave and reenter the 2degrees coverage zones occasionally.

All over ebay. I got one that looks the same back when they were over $100, competition is a wonderful thing ;) Havent played with the current generations of them but a friend got one when they were in the mid $50's and is very happy with it.

Try radar direct.
I think they sell GPS tracking devices you can hide inside your car and it uses a standard sim and sends text corodinates. I believe you can also 'geo fence' which means it will activate tracking when the car goes outside a defined area. There may be advanced models with web interfaces?
Also check out what the cabbies/couriers use... i think theres a link to the tracking hardware provider on timesavertraffic website.

try gsm gps tracker. or tk102 - the new ones even include a google maps URL in the sms reply which my one did not, makes it much easier on a phone to just open the map with th elink.
