The LG G3 is a phone I have been very keen to see in the flesh since it was announced earlier this year.

I consider myself a resolution junkie - always favouring higher resolution screens for my mobile, tablet and laptops.

QHD seemed like an insane leap forward for a 5" screen - it had to be better than anything else on the market, right?

Well, I finally got my hands on the G3 at 2 Degrees yesterday. When comparing side by side with my Z2, the difference in screen appearance is so minimal, it's almost impossible to tell the difference. If pushed, I would say that the G3 even looked a little 'over-resoluted' (is there such a word?) - hard to describe, but a little bit like being short sighted and putting on glasses that are slightly too strong for your vision. The Z2 looked as sharp, but a little easier on the eye.

So, my question is - do we really need QHD screens in 5"devices, or is this a step too far to be of any practical use? Is the extra drain on battery and processor worth the ever-so-infinitesimal increase in resolution (which arguably doesn't improve in appearance from full HD)?

I think it will be prevalent next generation, if they can get the battery drain under control I think there will be no real issue.

Going to be funny seeing 1080P midrange devices next year though.

Isnt there a point where the human eye cant notice the difference without an electron microscope? i think we got that with the S4.

Professional printers print at 600DPI, so I think you would want to be close to that.

I'm in two minds.

One one hand I love technology and progress.

On the other 4k on a 5" display seems utterly pointless.

how on earth do you drive 4k in 3d/graphics intensive situations.

You say that now but once you've seen a S5 (or any top line 1080 smartphone) next to a QHD phone putting aside IPS vs AMOLED, you'll see just how good QHD looks.

Heres hoping they can sort the battery drain out by the time it's ready for me to replace my S5

I'm all for higher resolutions - once the SoCs have caught up. Snapdragon 805 minimum for QHD methinks. Fingers crossed the Note 4 isn't two steps forward & one step back from the Note 3 as the G3 is to the G2.

To be honest OP you're asking the wrong people.

The question is why do the unwashed masses think they need QuadHD?

Or rather.. Why do marketing departments think QHD will sell better than advertising a 4 day battery life?

When the hardware can run QHD then I want it, I mirror my phone a lot and over the next couple of years as I update things to 4K I will have a use for the extra resolution (although not so much on the phone itself, even then). For right now too many compromises needed in the G3 to use that res.

Samsung have released the AMOLED QHD S5 LTE-A in Korea only, proving it's possible for it to be done right but the question remains whether it's worth it.

Full review:
Anandtech review the QHD Galaxy S5

TL:DR version:
Battery life S5 QHD = 10 hours
(for comparison: iPhone 5, LG G2 = 10 hours)

Basemark overall = 1231
(For comparison: Nexus 5 = 1213)

Traditional photo printers are 250 - 300ppi, but 100ppi looks fine for enlargements. QHD is unnecessary IMHO, it will increase battery drain and costs unnecessarily.

That pretty nice to see some of the compromises don't have to be done, but the SoCs still aren't up to pushing that resolution around for heavy lifting activities like emulation, so still not up to snuff for me. Thanks for the review link, will be interested to read that this evening after work.
