Just got my mum her first smartphone. Nexus 5 (not 5X). Upgraded to latest OS - so marshmallow. Phone is like now a month old she's had it, bought new. Without WiFi on, it goes from 100% battery (freshly charged) to 88% after 2hrs. Is this normal? The phone just sat on the table for 2hrs, no usage, the screen was never turned on ...

That seems like a bit much. Go into settings -> battery and try to work out what's using the power. Try installing Greenify and telling it to kill any problematic background applications (Facebook). Amplify is meant to be good for rooted phones.

Usually the first thing to check is go to settings > battery, check which app is using the most battery. Sometimes a rogue app will prevent the phone from sleeping.
This can be confirmed by tapping on the battery graph in settings, observe whether there are breaks in the 'awake' bar graph.
Lately there have been reports of Google sync errors preventing sleep. Sometimes a reboot will solve the issue.
Apps that support IM are battery hogs eg Facebook messenger, Viber, WhatsApp, Skype etc.

Boot into recovery and wipe cache partition.

Instructions on how to boot to recovery:

power off the phone completely.
press and hold Volume Down, Volume UP and Power buttons all at the same time.
– don’t release the buttons.
release the buttons only when the Fastboot / Bootloader Mode options appear.
– a START text is listed at the upper part of your device’s screen,
use the Volume buttons to change START to Recovery Mode option.
press the Power button to select Recovery Mode.
– after that you will see an Android robot tilted and showing a red warning sign.
now, you need to press and hold POWER, and then press once the Volume Up button.
the Stock Recovery Mode options will now appear on your device.

It sound a bug I've encountered (and Google knows about it). Try rebooting the phone after taking it off the charger and see if it will go to sleep (doze).

The bug I'm referring to, is a backup wakelock which keeps the phone awake. A workaround, until Google address the issue, would be to disable Google backup (of app data and WiFi passwords). OR keep rebooting the phone when you take it off the charger.

Without something like better battery stats, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what's going on, unless it is a rogue app misbehaving.

Hi guys

How do I know when the phone is on sleep? The screen just turns off by itself after 1 minute.

Looking at the battery consumption it shows:

WiFi 4%, Phone Idle 3%, Mobile Standby 3%, Android System 2%, Android OS 1%. Screen 1%, Photos 1%, Laucher3 1%, Google Services 1%. That is all. She does have WeChat and WhatsApp but doesn't use it often.

Recovery mode and wipe cache - does this wipe the phone? It's my mum's phone I rather not if it does. Her first smartphone, she's still learning how to use such a phone.

nexus 5 has a terrible battery, mine use to go flat in about 12 hours from normal usage, nothing to heavy. great phone, but terrible battery.

Just installed Amplify.

Running in Background:

WeChat, show battery percentage, WhatsApp, ANZ, WeChat (Push).

May slow down the device when ...

Money (Msn)

HSBC

AirNZ

Then it says show more apps with the down arrow.

I have one too and what he said. The battery life on the Nexus 5 is terrible.

Ok. I have charged it up to 100%. Power off. Power on. After 2hrs it shows 96%. WiFi was turned off. Before with WiFi off also without the restart after a 100% charge 2hrs it went from 100% to 88%.

Here is also the battery graph after I tapped onto it.

That sounds like the one! It's in different places on different devices/builds... for example:

In CM13 its in settings and in the system area > backup and reset > backup my data.

On my Nexus 7 (stock) it's settings > personal > backup and reset > backup my data.
