So is anyone else excited in getting this phone?

The only reason I didn't buy pixel 1 was because the camera didn't have OIS, and the new pixel solves that. Oh and it's waterproof.

I wonder when it will come to NZ

Looks pretty nice. The pricing looks like it will not be at iPhone levels too, which is a welcome sign. My Nexus 6P is still going strong although with the recent update of Oreo I have noticed a bit of a slow down opening or switching between apps. The XL looks pretty damn nice, hopefully in the next 6 months it is under $1000 and I'd consider buying one then. One annoyance is no 3.5mm jack, gah!

Tempted to pick one up when I’m in Aus later this month. But seems like it’s only released for pre order on 20/10( when I’m there). Alternative buy direct from google. Comes with free google mini as a promo. I’m over Apple after 3 generations and my 6 is gone so slow afte recently updating iOS.

I will trade in my non-XL Pixel at some stage for a Pixel2 XL - probably in the next 6 months or so - once I hear that the terrible Bluetooth that plauges the orginal Pixel lineup is gone.

I hope they release them officially in NZ this time, the PB Tech ones (the one I purchased) are the stupid American version, so no Carrier Aggregation in NZ.

Last year, I said if the next Pixel had smaller bezels and was waterproof, I'd be in. Well, they have reduced the bezels on the larger phone, but not the one I want; the smaller Pixel 2 has huge bezels. They are now splash-proof - but still not water resistant.

And, then Google go and remove the headphone jack (after singing it's praises last year!) and introduce this year's biggest gimmick - a squeezable phone (no thanks!). And sticking with the single rear camera. The only thing I do like is the metal body, way preferable to a fragile glass-backed phone.

If you compare the Pixel XL 2 with the LG V30, the LG betters the Pixel in that it has the same size screen yet more compact body, has a headphone jack (!), a high quality quad DAC, better waterproofing, dual cameras, and expandable storage to boot.

The Pixel betters the LG with a metal body and newer OS, but not much else that I can see.

Pass.

What does dual cameras give you other than the ability to say 2 is better than 1?

Depending on what the manufacturer decides, either optical zoom or addition of wide angle option.

Pixel 2 XL does look good.

However, its nothing that exciting. Its not really innovative in design, aesthetics or anything special about it.

But it is what a lot of people want, good hardware and vanilla android. With a solid camera, i think Google should be able to sell a fair few of these.

I think it will launch for around the same price as the Note 8 though, and the note 8 is better than the Pixel 2 XL (in my opinion, so far); except the software.

Removing headphone jack - now thats just annoying.

Been looking forward to the release of these phones for a while now.  Would really like to get the Pixel 2 XL version, but it's going to be expensive!  The Australian 64GB Pixel 2 XL will cost $1398AUD ($1534NZD).  if you convert that to USD then it's about $230USD more than they cost in the states.  No sign of it showing up in good old NZ yet though, either officially or unofficially.

Having dual cameras definitely has advantages and the 2 specific ones you mentioned here.

I am surprised the companies have not found a way to manipulate the image quality by combining images from both cameras into 1 (besides the bokah).

Eg Huawei has a monochrome and coloured sensor, and it combines information from both images into one. I do know that they (or maybe some other company) combine the apertures into a single image as well (to give an effective aperture of something better than F1.6).

If i were a dev in one of these companies, I would try to see how I can combine the image information of 2 12MP images into 1 18MP image or something so you can still have good crop and amazing image quality.

Well, back to the original point, I dont think having a single lens for the camera is a deal breaker (at this point). Once they start doing better things with dual sensors (where its actually affecting the image quality of photos significantly), then lets talk further.

Disclaimer: i use an iphone 7plus and have used the optical zoom a few times to get a closer shot of my subjects. It definitely is a nice to have.

I am rather torn; the Pixel 2 has bezels that are too large, while the 2 XL is just too large (unless I have missed something)

Not available in New Zealand ... and to purchase would cost me over $1k, which is far too much for a phone (having just paid $800 a month ago for an LG G6)

I however really miss "stock Google" ...

Why they couldn't just build the Pixel as a smaller version of the Pixel XL astounds me.

Perhaps they are doing an 'Apple' in making the more expensive option so much more attractive in a cunning ploy to try and shift more punters into into the higher price bracket?

Question is: Who is going to bring it to New Zealand? It is disappointing that once again New Zealand has been left out in the cold by Google. Dear Spark, how about giving this ago - sell some Pixel 2's.

No wireless charging so I prefer the S8 and also get the edge to edge display to boot.

I would imagine PB Tech and JBHIFI will sell these.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
