So I went on a road trip this past weekend to Rotorua, and on the way back we were going to stop in at Te Rapa (Hamilton) to see some friends. So I activated Android Auto, selected to use Google Maps, and off we went.... was working fine until I realized that I had gone a different way to what Google was advising (i had speech turned off), and figured "it'll re-route" - but it didn't. For some reason, Google insisted I had to use their way to get there and refused to re-route. I got to our destination going the way I roughly knew.

Anyone else come across this lately ?

No issues here, have been using it for months and it always re-routes without any problems.

Only in the cases where the turn i failed to take was close or equal to doing a U turn at where the maps prescribe you do it.

Was their way the only one that satisfied the preferences you had eg no highways or toll routes?

Edit: Did you have mobile coverage at the time?

Could it be an issue with their roads database, rather than programmed stubborness? If you put in your start and end point now, can it find a route between them at all?

Reason I ask, is that you can get funny outcomes when a particular road, or turning direction at an intersection, isn't in their database.

No issues here.  Did you force the app to close and reopen/refresh?

Does it do the same if you try and recreate the journey using google maps from the web?

Only option I have set is no tolls.

And wasn't using data, never do and never have previously and never had this issue.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Is the map area between Rotorua and Hamilton available as an offline map in your Google Maps? If the maps weren't available offline, and data wasn't available, then the map application won't know about the roads to re-route you.

Thats a possibility actually........ lets see..... you could be onto something :) Had a map for Matamata, so it may have caught Hamilton in it as well :) have removed it now and will see how it behaves going forward :)

Cheers

You'll still need to download an offline map in order for it to re-route while offline in future. In the Google Maps app, go to the drop down menu and select offline maps. You can download an area covering Whangarei in the north to New Plymouth for just under 90 MB (which is what I have). It'll update once a month (on wifi only) before it expires.

Or get the Navigate app... it has free downloadable maps (and speed cameras).

And, now that the question has been answered....

Maybe dairies and gas stations along the indicated route are Google advertisers? ;)

I had Here Maps on my Windows Phone too and installed it on my Android when I first got it, but found that I just never used it.
