Hi all.

Got a Pixel 7 that months ago got a software update that enabled 4G VoLTE. All good, but my local cellsite is 3G only, so when I walk across the room, it jumps to 4G, even although its a really weak signal. This causes phone calls to hicup etc.

Only answer I have found is to turn off option "4G calling, use 4G services to improve voice calls." Means all phone calls are 3G. Not that big an issue, but is there any other work around? Eventually 2Degrees will either upgrade the local cellsite to 4G or turn it off. That will solve the problem!

If the Pixel 7 supports wifi calling, then that would be your only other option, I would think.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Unfortunately wifi calling isn't an option on this phone yet. Well mine anyway...

Have a read through this thread. I think WiFi calling is enabled only on certain carriers in NZ. I know VoWifi doesn't work on my Pixel 8 on Vodafone.

If you want VoWiFi and other features to work reliably, buy a Samsung locally.

VoWifi is working on Spark on my Pixel 7.

Buying a Samsung would be a downgrade.

Surprised there's a 2deg site without 4G -- do you know which site it is? Have a look on gis.geek.nz and find the name of it. Most 2deg sites now have at least one of 4G/LTE 900 or 4G/LTE 700 so you may be seeing your phone switch between 3G 900 and 4G 900 (or 4G 700) off the same tower. The 2G 900 switch off they did some years ago saw most 2deg sites get 4G/LTE 900 to replace the 2G 900 gear.

Might be a good idea to stay with 3G voice calling for the time being. Either (a) the local tower is already running 4G gear and you may find the 3G switch off that will come next year will come with a more reliable 4G service (as they will tweak the 4G coverage so better if not equal to 3G to ensure same/better coverage post 3G switch off) OR more unlikely (b) it hasn't got 4G yet and it'll be upgraded before 3G switch off with either or both 4G 700 and/or 4G 900.

OK. I signed up and viewed the cell tower list. It is Invercargill SW (STH-075-006-B). Listed as 700: 4G LTE, 900: 3G UMTMS and/or 4G LTE, 2100: 3G UNTS.

Well the license information indicates 4G capable, but it ain't.

I drove down to it and sat there. Still 3G, so rebooted phone, still 3G HSPA+. Phone is always 4G or 5G when in the big smoke of Invercargill (about 8 KM away). So I guess I will have to wait till they upgrade it. At least they finally replaced the backup batteries. It got down to 1 hour if the power went off, but now 3 plus hours :)
