Wait, so 5G is different to other tech where it's only compatible if the network actually approves the device?

Are the days of using any old random 3G phone by adding in the details in settings dead?

If so it makes it much harder for those who travel and need 5G.

Approve yes but configuration must be there.

That's why people with Oneplus 8 can get it going with root(or you run the first stable release of Android 11), the configuration is there but is disabled, unapproved handset but it works.

My Xiaomi Poco F3? Configs there, unapproved device. Works out of the box including VoLTE.

Would be interested to hear from anyone who has gotten one if 5G works for them.

Given 2degrees don't yet have 5G at all, I'd guess this is just copy-pasta and not actual verified info, sadly

I know DSE / Kogan doesn't have a great rep, but I see they now have Pixel 6 and 6 Pro available.  Anyone know whether those prices would get customs fees slapped on top?

Shop for Pixel 6 (dicksmith.co.nz)

Nah GST is paid for so no custom fees.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Wow that DSE pricing is so much more reasonable than PI. Given Kogan are AU-based I wonder if they will send it back to AUS in the event of needing service.

Just gotta hope they stock something more than 128GB and I'm probably in.

When I sent back my OP8 I was given an address to a mobile authorized repair business in Auckland.

Likely to be the same here in this case.

Cherios:
MaxineN: Even with the bands, if the configuration isn't there it's not gonna work.

I would go and actually read this entire thread and look at the other threads with other pixel phones that have had 5G and you'll see that it flat out doesn't work unless you're happy with modifying the system and gaining root to add something that may or may not even work anyway.

If someone wants to fund me a purchase of one I'd be happy to throw all of our big 3 SIM cards at it and see what works and what doesn't but my guess and from reading every other thread here on GZ is: 5G isn't going to work.

I've repeated this song and dance a fair bunch and unless any of the big 3 carriers take interest or Google actually opens their eyes I doubt you'll get an update to enable it anyway.

Rip there goes everyones hopes and dreams of owning a Google pixel 6/pro now lmao

Before the P6 was released I was interested in a Motorola 5G that PB Tech was selling.  I asked them  if it worked on 5G and VoLTE in NZ.  They said that they thought it may work on Vodafone but couldn't guarantee it so didn't buy it.  I'm on Skinny so who knows what will work .

Seems like it. When I went to the .au equivalent website, the prices were different.

Seems so, they have a big banner on the side with a bank note icon saying "All prices in NZ Dollars", and when we got to checkout the pricing at the bottom of the page says "Total (incl. GST)"

Take a screenshot if you're worried, if you get picked for extra duty seems like it would be easy to resolve with this proof. Seems much more reasonable pricing indeed and where Mightyape should have been (given the same ownership anyway).

Oh this is goood! If this is the price, I might actually order one from them. (If there's no customs duty of course) I hope they add some colours to the options.
