ArtooDetoo:
I had originally had an order with Clove UK which they pulled due to the reported Wifi and GPS issues.
So I can report no such issues.
so far loving the experience

I can confirm the GPS issues. Absolutely no lock on the few satellites that randomly appear and immediately vanish again. I'd say you're one of the fortunate few.

WiFi has been fine for me. No probs there at all.

I found the still images from the camera to be noisy and lacking dynamic range, at least compared to my Sensation.

Think the dock is the biz - don't think I'd consider a tablet without one, but that's prolly just me.

Glad you're enjoying yours...

Cheers,
R2

yes second look at the GPS issue I agree with you.
I Used GPS Test and sure enough having trouble getting fixes and keeping them.
Wifi definitely OK.
Not too worried have a Samsung Note which does the most work where GPS is concerned. (Geocaching)

As far as the Camera goes Id have to disagree with R2 at this stage.
Ill set up some shots to compare in a few days

Have a look at the shot comparison here. Both set to ISO100, same venue, same day (different times).

I'll be interested to see your comparison.

I wonder if we should start a new thread re picture quality here??
It can be a somewhat subjective aspect of picture viewing IMHO.
How far do you actually zoom in.
Even the pics that came supplied on the Prime look very nice on the surface but if you zoom in of course you get noise .
Compare pun not intended apples with apples so too speak.
Is it better compare it to dedicated camera of equivalent specs for example.
Sorry to add further questions here

In terms of the camera I think it's fair to judge it in the context of what it's competitors are like, and what the real use-case scenario is for a tablet camera (ie it doesn't really have one other than the occasional candid shot when you have nothing else to hand). If you read lots of reviews you'll see the camera is one of the better (?best) ones out there as far as tablets are concerned.

Has anyone been able to buy the 64GB transformer prime from JB Hi Fi in NZ?

Originally I had an order from November 28 2011 with B&H in the US, but cancelled this in January as taking forever and never got an up front answer from B&H.

Then 1.5 weeks ago I found the prime in a JB Hi Fi store, didn't have any stock, so ordered and paid for one.
Was told it should arrive within a week.

1.5 weeks later the same store is now telling me my Prime won't arrive for another 3-4 weeks (mid March).
:(

If you're willing to put up with their service, then try Expert Infotech, it's where I ended up getting mine (they actually had stock).

Might be I'm spoilt by the image quality on my phone. The difference is quite marked, (the noise is much less apparent on the Sensation's image) but as NZTF points out, tablets don't seem to be generously equipped image sensor wise as a rule. Better than nothing, but more of an emergency snapper I think. The iPad's camera isn't exactly stellar either, probably for the same reasons.

I thought the Prime's video was entirely acceptable though.

The wider images you saw were at 100%, just cropped to fit the blog. The zoomed images were enlarged about 200% in Photoshop, with no sharpening to compensate for the interpolation. But valid, as each image was treated exactly the same.

If a good quality still image was really important to a prospective purchaser, then I doubt they'd buy any tablet. Seems to be more of a gimmick than anything really useful, but who can resist free? :-)

Cheers,
R2

I had a big surprise this morning.
Several days ago I found that there was a new firmware update for the Transformer Prime.
Today I thought Id retest the GPS Functionality of the Prime.
Well well after going outside I had the tab with dock open. within seconds I had 12 satellites showing. Accuracy was coming down quickly.
So it appears that that firmware must have improved the GPS functionality
Also note the Filled circle at the bottom of the screen indicating a good GPS fix.
This is way better than before. Would not establish a fix. Lucky to find 2 satellites
The screen shot below this one is a comparison from the Galaxy Note - the Note can get the Russian satelites as well

Wow. Wish that had worked for me. :-(

Maybe the next update? By then, NZtechfreak will have it back so he'll prolly follow up with his experience.

Good to see you've got the result you wanted though. :-)

On a related note - I was pleased to get an OTA update to 4.0.3 on my Asus Transformer (TF101) this morning. Am now enjoying ice cream sandwich goodness. I hadn't been all that hopeful on getting ICS for my TF101, so it is a pleasant surprise.

kind regards Andrew TD
