networkn: So no-one has their phone yet? I have heard the screen and body are scratch prone and that screen protector and case are strongly advised?
It's a deal breaker for me if that's the case?

Nothing I have heard about and I have watched tonnes of reviews and talked about this phone on other tech forums too. I would probably still put a screen protector on no matter what, but I'd be interested to know who is saying this is more scratch prone than any other phone, I mean any phone can and most likely will get scratches over time if not kept in a case.

I have just found out that my Z2 I had purchased from Clove has been charged with GST, which is not surprising. What does surprise me is the amount they are charging me. The they valued the item at $1900 for a "handheld computer". Is it a common thing that the customs charges ridiculous amount? Does anyone know if there is a way to dispute the amount?

I've had a unit for some time, no more issues with scratching than any other modern device. That said, I'd be inclined to get a glass screen protector if it was my own device, since those things are a marvel & it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

My unit did not have the usual factory-fitted screen protector, do the retail units?

Finally decided to register, been lurking in this thread a short while.

I pre-ordered my Z2 via the Vodafone website Monday 12th, it shipped the evening of the 19th(This past Monday) and arrived yesterday.
Came with the magnetic charging dock and noise canceling headphones which was quite the surprise! I thought it was a mistake until I read the forum post here. Very happy with the bonus I must admit. A dock is great considering the charging port for cable is covered by a flap.

When you get your phone there are numerous updates for just about every application already installed on the phone, Google and Sony.

Quite the difference to my S3 the physical feel is one of solid build quality

After playing with it quite a bit the niggles every phone has are fairly minor:

  • The FM radio app could be better, and there's no widget. But Smart Connect can start the Radio automatically on putting headphones in(defaults to music/walkman application).
  • Sony apps push their content quite heavily but if you avoid, you wont notice.
  • No torch widget/app, downloaded one but the brightness is lack lustre, camera application has torch option itself, but that's an extra step and requires camera app to stay running.
  • Tap to wake is fun, I feel a little Frank Underwood every time I rap my knuckles on the screen to wake it up. Can be a little flaky.
  • Can't hide applications. But you can disable facebook app and a few others. Although beyond hiding it I'm not sure what benefits that has beyond not setting up an account. Unsure if it's more recent Android or Sony but to counter not being able to hid applications you can set 'Applications' view to your own order, alphabetical, most used (20) or to Installed(downloaded).
  • Ability to stop applications using notification area on per app basis, wahoo! Ditto system icons.
  • Fast, snappy and most recent version of Android, hooray! <- most good points come under this heading.
I'd popped my 2 degrees simcard in, snapper doesn't work but I do have a spare card lying around anyway which the phone can still top up. MMS wouldn't download until I requested 2 degrees send me the settings, I also sent the internet settings just in case - I'd been at home on wifi. SMS was working, except during initial set up when I needed my 2 factor Google authentication, I had to disable on PC, sign in on phone, then re-enable.

Android settings needs the search function from Windows ASAP.

Haven't spent much time trying to scratch the screen yet so can't help you there sorry.

Short version: Wahoo! Loving it, and get a dock. Seriously.

Contacted customs, turns out the declared value is supposed in NZD but treated as GBP. Must have been a typo or something. Hopefully will be getting mine soon.

Got mine now. Of course I royally screwed up applying the screen protector, tried to reapply it and got dust under it. That's $45 down the drain.

If you haven't destroyed or threw away the screen protector, use Scotch tape (doesn't leave residue behind) to peel the screen protector off and try again. Also use the tape to pick up dust. Good luck.

Yes, Scotch tape. I just applied my screen protector to my Sony smartwatch yesterday and got dust under it, I nearly spat the dummy, but scotch tape saved the day.

Wow, lucky you. But at least there is light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully Noel Leeming in Palmy will get mine soon.

I got a bit over enthusiastic and put my HTC One X up on TradeMe. As luck has it somebody hit BuyNow and now it's gonesmile.
However this is a bit a double sided sword as I'm now left with a 12 year old Alcatel 525 which I found in one of the drawers. Gee, now I really feel disconnected!
Then somebody sent my a TXT and when I tried to reply I didn't know how to turn off the bloody predictive text entry....
Quite a learning curve to go back in time undecided

Thanks guys but sadly I had properly ruined the protector. A lot of dust on the adhesive side so I threw it out. Made a dash to the Sony store in Sylvia Park where they had screen protectors for $13. Only does the front but at least you get a spare in case you're an idiot like me.

Should be with you by the end of the week but I would call them twice daily, morning and afternoon. They're so freaking useless at calling customers to tell them when a product comes in. I actually had to call them to find out. :/

I remember the old Alcatels. Good times drawing black and white backgrounds one pixel at a time!

Anyone know of a place in Newmarket that has the Z2 powered on beside the new HTC M8?

Ducked into Sylvia Park to grab a case for my Z2.  He said they sold out of the Z2's in a couple days and are out of stock.

Glad I got my one ready to collect at home.

When will Telecom or 2Degrees have the Z2s?

Also, for those with a Vodafone handset, does it show a Vodafone start screen on boot up?

It's been about 5 years since I saw a device that wasn't specifically branded by Vodafone, have this functionality. Telecom does it though, it's annoying as hell.
