Has anyone noticed how the notification bar on top will show up out of the blue every few minutes? For example you're browsing a site and the bar shows up. If you have a Bluetooth car kit you also hear a "beep".

I wonder if this is the OS or Widgtesdroid causing it?

I just noticed that the HTC One 801n from Expansys doesn't support LTE 1800 so wouldn't be able to get LTE on Vodafone's network here. Anyone know what bands Telecom will be rolling out ?

Expansys also have the 801s LTE. I can remember which 801x variant we have here.

Hey everyone, i'm obviously new here, recently purchased an HTC One and loving it. My previous two phones were iPhones (3GS and 4), but only out of necessity. Have been itching to get out of the Apple ecosystem for years, but never managed to for various reasons. I still have one of the original Asus Transformer TF101's, so have some experience with Android, but the HTC One has definitely improved my overall experience of it.

The reason for joining and posting is to maybe get some help, but to also potentially help others who may be having battery life issues. This is a reasonably specific case, but you never know.. apologies for the LONG post to follow.

So i've only had the phone running for about five days now, and still feel very much like i'm in the "run in" period, but yesterday was the first day it had been left on the charger overnight, and then left off the charger all day to see how the battery would hold up. In that time i used it moderately at the most (in comparison to what other people have described in various HTC One battery threads), and had it on power save mode, but auto brightness. Emails aren't automatically syncing, but checked them numerous times throughout the day, streamed Google Play Music for about an hour, took a couple of Zoes, and used a couple of news/current affair type apps. Was pretty much connected to WiFi all day (more on that later). Went from 0600-1830 and had 15% battery left. Not terrible, but thought that was a little short of what it could be doing.

Looking at my power usage history, i found that although the screen was off a lot of the day, the phone itself was awake nearly constantly. So i did a lot of researching last night, and downloaded Wakelock Detector to see if i could find any apps that might be causing issues. The process that stood out was GTALK_ASYNC_CONN. Unfortunately googling that, and reading through the results, has led me to believe that no one has managed to figure out what app this relates to. Most initially thought Google Talk for obvious reasons, but then generally ruled that out, and subsequently conclude it's still Google related, but no one has come up with any specifics that i can find. If there's anyone here who can shed some light on that, i'd be very grateful (maybe my google search skills weren't up to the task).

What i did find, was that some people noticed it was more active on their somewhat restrictive work WiFi vs home WiFi, and so today i've turned off WiFi while at work, and just used 3G to see if there was any difference. This is only one day's worth of use, so not a proper test really, but i've noticed a marked difference. That was the only thing i've done differently today, and i went from 0600-1600 with nearly 70% battery left. Wakelock detector still shows GTALK_ASYNC_CONN, but it's been active MUCH less, and my phone's awake time nearly exactly matches screen on time now. I may have used the phone slightly less today, but nothing that would make that much difference.

Only thing i personally notice that's unsual about my work vs home WiFi, is that on both the HTC One and my old iPhone 4, neither can sync the stock email applications. Whereas either Mailbox on the iPhone, or Gmail on the HTC One have no problems syncing over work WiFi. Makes me think that GTALK_ASYNC_CONN may have something to do with auto-syncing of somesort, and the work WiFi isn't letting it, so it's continuously waking the phone up and trying to do it throughout the day, churning through my battery. Sound reasonable? Anybody else have issues like this or insight into the problem?

GTALK_ASYNC_CONN actually seems to be related to the various Google services sync. Kind of important.

What you will want to do is turn off location services for Google apps. Should be able to find it under Google Settings in the app drawer. Also Google Now chews through an awful lot of battery. If you don't really use it then make sure it's off, Search > Menu > Settings. Then toggle Google Now off.

Also go into the Account settings and under your Google account, uncheck all the items that you don't need it to sync.

Thanks for the tips. I will try without Google Now at some stage soon, but i would like to use it if i can, although i have to admit it's usefulness in NZ seems to be pretty limited at this stage.

My logic was, that surely if Google Now, or the location services were causing the issue, would they not still churn through the battery while off Wifi, as they're still collecting the data at the same frequency, and the same amount of data also, just though a different method

I'm still at work, and turned Wifi back on an hour ago. My phone is now showing as being awake much more again, even though the screen has been off for the majority of the time.

I already have sync turned off in the Account>Google section as well

It may be worth looking into apps like Viber, Whatsapp and Facebook messenger. They can drain battery quickly.

Good suggestion, but i don't have any of those installed.

I'm sure there is an app at fault here somewhere, but i would have thought turning Wifi off would not reduce the amount of wake time for each app, unless there is a problem with it trying to sync as i described at the end of my initial post. The only thing i've come across having trouble doing that is the stock mail client so far, but i guess my next trial could be leaving Wifi on and turning off Google location services to see how that affects "awake" time

It is odd since mobile data usually sucks way more battery than Wifi.

I know it is a pain but it may be worth backing up data and factory resetting the phone.

I had a couple of drain issues since maps v7 update, turning off location tracking seemed to fix it

Thanks, that's pretty useful. Interestingly (to me anyway), i'm on my home wifi today, and the phone is awake reasonably often while the screen is off, but the culprit here is NetworkLocationLocator, which i assume is location services. Also, it doesn't seem to churn through as much battery (still above 80% after 6hrs since it came off the charger). GTALK_ASYNC_CONN has only had the phone awake for 7sec in that time.

Turning off location services and any google syncing options i could find yesterday while at work, made no difference to the amount of time GTALK_ASYNC_CONN was active, it was keeping the phone awake roughly 80% of the time.

I guess i either lose some functionality, and utilise blakamins suggestion, or stay off Wifi while at work (luckily i'm still on one of the old Vodafone 3Gb data plans)

Hey guys.

Ok while this doesn't have anything to do with HTC One as such, it is my device and didn't think my question was worth opening a new thread.

What is the difference between "Music" and "Play Music"? I (Im guessing most/all of us) have it installed on our phones.

Music is the songs from your PC you have copied over and Play Music is the browsing of thousands of songs like Spotify?
