NikT:
timmmay: I don't think I'd want a hardware button on a tablet. I tend to turn it on and use it for a while, reading in front of TV, watching a movie, etc. My phone I pick up dozens of times a day, to set or view reminders, check my email, make calls, etc, etc, etc. The front button is a much easier way to wake up the phone when it's on a desk than having to pick it up every time.

Completely agree. Unsure why major tech sites haven't picked up that the ability to wake the phone from the front is one of the chief reasons both Samsung & Apple persist with physical home keys. I find I regularly press it when sliding the phone from my pocket, & don't have to rearrange my hands or the device to wake it up as I've had to when using HTC's silly top-mounted power buttons.

Have you tried any devices with a double-tap to wake feature, though? Killer on the Lumia 920 Mum got for her birthday last year, would imagine LG's KnockOn similarly excellent - definitely a compromise I'm happy with, that.

On a more Moto G-centric tangent, has anyone tried the flip cover? Is the magnet in it any good? Don't like flip covers so much myself, but they're interesting when done well.

Works nicely, replaces the battery cover and sits nicely on the phone. Flip it open and the phone wakes automatically.

Does it hold shut securely? Samsung's are basically a solid magnet away from being a good product. Think I could dig something like the iPad smart covers, or with a nice gimmick like HTC's One max's flip cover with built in kickstand & extended battery - it's the ones that flop open & closed that bother me.

Neat! Ta. Bodes well for future products (I'm hopeful for a phablet).

old3eyes:Just out of interest what network  is your fiancée on and how has she handled a pure Android device??  I want to buy one for the wife the wife who is used to Samsung Galaxy range  which is fairly user friendly.  I have a Nexus 4 and  there were a couple of issues that i had to use a 3rd party apps for..

She's been on an LG Optimus One (P500) for almost 3 years with CyanogenMod on it, which turns it from a mediocre phone into a pretty good one (for its age). She deals with it perfectly well, sends\receives messages & calls fine and uses it as an MP3 player. I set it all up so it's super straightforward for her as she's a total technophobe but she has no real problem with it. About the only extra things I've put onto it is "ColorNote" which is very handy, the Telecom app for checking balance, and a couple of widgets to enable\disable data easily and show an international clock.

Prior to that she had a Samsung flip-phone.

We're both on Telecom.

Google Play Edition now available on US Playstore according to Android Twitter feed so I expect they'll be a port on XDA soon

What does "google play edition" do for you? The Moto G is pretty close to google edition anyway, as far as I can tell.

quicker access to updates apparently - but I dunno what would be different software wise - the only motorola stuff on there is Assist and Motorola ID.

As per usual with the GPE devices, the hardware is not well suited to NZ networks - better to get the international Moto G &put a custom GPE ROM on it, as these will inevitably become available soon.

Although as others have pointed out, there's not a lot of point to this particular device given Moto's stellar recent record at pushing updates out - I'd imagine its value will become more obvious in the long term as US operator testing inevitably delays the update process for the devices they certify. Less of an issue for unlocked, unbranded, international devices.

Speaking of, that international release of the Moto X is neat - anyone keen?

Has anyone gotten Android 4.4 on the Moto G yet? My partners came from Amazon.co.uk, and it's meant to be being pushed out over there, but when I check it's not available.

Why do you say that, it IS based on the international MotoG and not the US one?

UMTS/HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)

Interesting! Counter to the early reports I'd read, you're quite correct. Apologies.

How unusual, this move significantly restricts the markets it will work with T-Mobile US on to the ones that have T-mo's relatively-limited 1900MHz refarm (Which I seem to recall ran in tandem with their LTE rollout, which is of course no particular use on the G's LTE-less hardware).

All go for GPE Moto G in NZ, then - the first (Hopefully of many?) GPE device that's better suited to international use than local market US.

Yes but not at the price they're asking in Europe..
