On KG5 in a fringe area in Auckland, works best of all i have tried todate, best battery life if it makes a difference also changed out GPS settings from europe to oceania

jpanwala: hey guys.. a very simple question (to the extent of me sounding dumb)

If I am to "try" out a new ROM (currently Litening 6.1 XXKH3), I do a nandroid backup of my existing ROM (essential) on internal SD, then if I am to WIPE data & cache to make way for the new ROM (let's say Dlev in this case) wont I lose the nandroid backup as result of the "wipe"?

Is this something as simple as copying the nandroid backup to a computer and putting it back on the phone whenever I want to roll back or backing up to external SD card? Need to be sure any file permissions are not altered if I take the backup elsewhere!!!

Data wipe shouldn't wipe it unless you format sd card as well. As a back up jsut copy across the backup file onto your PC and if you want/need to roll back jsut copy back to SD and do a recovery from CWM

IMHO Lite'ning with its lack of further development feels dated compared to some of the newer offerings now, in reality you wont want to go back,

Checkrom rev HD seems like a good starting point however i seem to have picked up a wake lock issue so battery drain is a bit ugly. As far as the rom goes it would be my pick of the bunch as it allows quick and simple upgrading and modding OTA, i imagine it will be the 'safe' option for S2 owners much as Lite'ning was a couple of months ago

Thanks for replying wade.. yeah agreed Litening is a bit dated now but still it fits around my usage and liking well enough for me to continue using it normally.

Want to test a few other ROM's, checkROM is definitely on the list as is Dlev 2.1 and Cyanogen 7.1 RC1. Hopeing to find a real nice upgrade/replacement for what I have right now. Would love to continue on Litening bute eventually have to move on.

Also, correct me if wrong, but I always thought "wipe data" or WIPE ROM's remove all user data i.e. settings, apps, files, media, TXT, call logs, contacts, everything! And hence since the backup is something on the SD card, that will go away as well.

Using KH3 modem at this time, just installing the KG5 one as everyone reports positive about it and lets see how that goes... :-)

EDIT : So here is what I just did after the initial post:

Did a nandroid backup of current ROM and settings (Litening 6.1/XXKH3 baseband)
Flashed KI3 modem via CWM
Tested KI3 modem, felt a bit worse
did a test run to restore using CWM just to get used to the whole nandroid thing.
This should restore everything to as it was. including XXKH3 modem/baseband as I thought.
Restore complete. Baseband still showing XXKi3!!! What happened here? or is the modem not included in backup?
Isn't a nandroid backup an "image" of the whole system? and when restoring, shouldn't the KH# baseband files be put back on??

Why not just get a bunch of modems and flash them in turn... btw just flashed the CheckRom Revolution with KI4 modem and got 7.6mbit down on Telecom XT..

hmm.. I see nandroid backup does not contain the kernel & modem.

Interesting and a good find as switching back from something like CM 7.1 wont be that simple in this case..

Nice one! Was getting 6 Mb/s on KH3 but 4 max now.. currently also on KI4..

Any other S2 users on XT in Hamilton? Keen to find out what speeds you're getting.

Hey guys,

Just read through this thread and there is some very helpful information, I have a few questions before I root my Telecom I9100T.

Firstly has anyone successfully made a backup of/or has the original kernel for Telecom (GT-I9100TLKJTNZ), this question has been asked before in this thread but no one has replied and Intratech on XDA has not been able to get it either. I have had to send the mobile back to repair a screen glitch once already since September so wont feel comfortable flashing if I cant revert back to default.
- side note is there a method of backing up this data pre root or gaining root on this current kernel to back it up.

Does CWM backup the CSC and Phone during a "nandroid backup".

I am using a vodafone sim in the mobile so would I need to:
a) change the gps.conf or is it already set to xtra server in the telecom mobile and will that get wiped on the install of a custom rom.

b)Should I install a different modem since im on the vodafone network rather than XT

Lastly, should I invest in a jig (I live in Wellington and probably dont intend to flash that often)

Context: XT supporting Fast Dormancy:

DoggNZ: Ok, done. Will see if it improves battery life any

Made a MASSIVE improvement for me... testing overnight - Enabled, for about 7 hours, ~30-40% battery loss. Disabled, for about 4 hours, 2%. Now about 11 hours, and still only 18% with some use this morning.

So much so, I'm going to go in to the local XT store today, and talk to the relatively techincal guys there and explain to them what should be done on the SGS2 to make a huge battery life improvement.

So are you saying XT users should find a way to disable fast dormancy? How do we do that?

I think there may have had some other issue to have a battery drain so fast. Poor reception will do it easily, but just having fast dormancy enabled will not. I'm on XT and have barely noticed any difference in disabling it (disable by entering *#*#9900#*#* in your dialer and selecting disable fast dormancy).

I have done the following;

Checkrom Revolution HD rom, with Siyahkernel v1.8
Run SetCpu between 100Hz ~1200Hz on Smartass2 governor, undervolted to 800mv, 825mv, 900mv, 975mv, 1100mv, 1200mv
Turn FB app updates off and notifications on = push notifications only, and i only run skype when required verses constantly in the background

I am getting 1%/hr drain overnight, 2~3%/hr drain during the day, and about 6%/hr drain under high use

I am running all the usual samsung apps (social hub, dive etc), auto sync, 3G on etc, basically i am using it in a normal to moderate way and getting 16+ hours day in day out, usually with at least 1.5hrs of screen on time

I am on VFNZ but this should have little bearing to outcome

Yes, I may have jumped the gun a little, I completely forgot that earlier in the night I'd changed my exchange accounts from Push to 15minute polling... I suspect (as many others will) that this is the primary reason for my improved consumption, but it's likely that disabling fast dormancy helps a little.

As mentioned, it's *#*#9900#*#* in the phone dialer, and there's a button on the resulting page to disable it.

Does it only work on stock sgs2 roms? I am using CM7 and i dont get anything when i type *#9900#.
