Got my S7 from the Spark store on Friday, very pleased with it, much less laggy than the LG G4 it's replacing, battery life seems much the same so far, which is fine, turned off most of the "always-on" stuff as it's just not very beneficial. Managed to get Semble to work which is amusing, not a big fan of the physical home button without a "tap-to-wake" alternative, as long as it lasts that's fine, but tap-to-wake is about the only feature I miss from the G4, other than the rear-mounted buttons which while a bit gimmicky actually made a lot of sense.

Wireless charging works fine with the same cheap QI pad I was using previously which is a bonus.

Chromecast seems to have a few minor issues with it but I expect there will be an update for that soon which sorts that out.

They wouldn't let me buy it outright so it's on the 2-year interest free on the phonebill deal, which is fine, I'll probably lump-sum the remainder in a couple of months. I got the Samsung plastic hard-case to put it in as it looks reasonably smart and makes the phone marginally less slippery.

I got my S7 from PB Tech. I've put my Spark SIM in it.

So far, I haven't seen any connection to 4G/LTE. I'm getting H+ and Speedtest is showing a paltry 2.4mbps down and 0.8mbps up.

Currently on Great South Road in Greenlane.

Update: OK...I've got 4G a bit further down the road....24Mbps down and 0.9Mbps up. At least it works.

Check that it's actually in 4G/3G/2G mode and not just 3G/2G.

Thanks. I checked. It's OK.

I'll keep an eye on it. It just felt like I should be seeing 4G and wasn't....(and hadn't so far)....so I re-booted the phone (LG Optimus 3D had an issue where it would lose 3G until a re-boot) and went to place I am certain to see 4G...and I could see it, but it wasn't very fast on the uplink side. Hmm.

Bonus, my LG wireless charging pads, retired on the demise of my Nexus 5, have now got a new lease of life with my S7. So good to have wireless charging again!

No problem here as yet. 5GHz wifi connected.

I believe I have seen an issue with 2.4GHz connections on my Note 3 and also the daughters Huawei P8 both running Lollipop.

Can anyone tell me why SPark won't let you buy the phone outright? Sounds like an incredibly dumb bit of business.

Yup, because supply is constrained and because they make a LOT more money out of a connection + phone than just a phone on it's own. Also locks you to Spark for another x number of years.

The Samsung kiosks have the Spark branded phones to buy outright. They also have 2Degrees and Vodafone variants. Same phones, different carrier branding. 2Degrees variant only seems to have the 2Degrees app and browser default homepage points to 2degrees. No startup logo.

Because the phone is available outright elsewhere. My guess  is (and it is just that - a wild stab in the dark) that Spark would like to receive ongoing revenue from each S7 handset it sells, at least for a short time. Not really dumb business when you think about it. A phone out the door for a one off cost is ok, but a phone out the door for a one off cost PLUS a monthly spend is better....

This is similar to what happens in the US each time an iPhone is released.

Nothing new here. It's been happening this way for years with major flagship phones.

This is common when the supply is limited. They want maximum value out of each one and they reckon they can get it. When they can't anymore, you'll be able ot buy it separately.

This is why places like PB Tech have value. They'll sell it to you stand-alone....and often cheaper.

I recently (September) tried to buy an SGS6 64GB phone and waited in a queue at Spark at Sylvia Park for about 20 minutes.....gave up and walked down the mall to Noel Leemings and they were selling the same phone for $100 cheaper....and I didn't have to wait to talk to the sales people. They were all over me.

200GB MicroSD arrived from Amazon this morning. Should be enough room for... well, everything.
