I went into my local Harvey Norman to check them out, and while I had my yearly bout of upgraditus when they were announced, I must admit a hands-on experience really dampened my enthusiasm

Handling the Ultra made me remember why I switched from Notes to S phones, and my main selling point, the cameras, didn't exactly blow me away. And comparing the S22+ side-by-side with my S20+, while an adaptive refresh screen is exactly what I wanted in the first place with the S20, and I was interested to see what the new 50MP camera can do, really not a whole lot has materially changed... certainly not enough for me to shell out the $1599 for it

TBH, I feel like this is where Apple really has their product line better covered: two feature levels, two sizes for each. For me, the 13 Pro combination is exactly where I want to be: top features, namely screen + cameras, in a more hand friendly design.  With the S22 range, you really either have to love the big slab of a Note design or settle for a lower tier phone.

Oh well, more money for the grinder...

Don't judge the cameras too soon is my comment. Sammy always improves their camera over time, especially soon after launch :)

I am coming from a Note 9 so this will be a big jump for me.

"13 Pro", "top cameras in hand friendly design" etc S22 was supposed to cover this but yes you are right though. To be fair, the S22 cameras are coming out better than the 13 Pro/Max's cameras in reviews so at least not a low tier camera. Just because the Note 22 has a better camera doesn't make the S22 camera any less capable than the 13 Pro. Recent battery test drain results show that base S22 battery is holding up with 13 Pro so battery wise its not too bad either.

I do agree with you on the omissions of other features like Wifi6E, UWB, LTPO, 10-120hz, higher res screen, 45W charging from the S22 vs S22U surely make you feel like it is a lower tier phone.

However, you can get the base S22 256GB for $1199 today. Plus a whole Galaxy Watch4 which is $399 worth, so approximately you are getting the base S22 for $800 or if you don't want to keep the watch and rather sell it for half price $200, then around $1000.

Whereas for an equivalent 6.1inch screen (bigger, fatter and heavier) iphone 13 Pro is $1999 which makes base S22 literally half the cost of iphone 13 Pro. I'm willing to overlook the above highlighted features if it means I'm getting the phone for half the cost of 13 Pro.

I can agree with the last part, main reason I went for the Ultra was for the superior camera. Had the S22+ have the same camera as the Ultra, I would've chosen that.

My Otterbox cases arrived this morning and I immediately thought "Have I made the right choice", its humongous, having never owned a Note device.

The Otterbox Defender case does add a few mm all around which makes it even more cumbersome to handle.

From a sizing perspective the truth is there would have to be something that would have to be made smaller to accommodate for the cameras.

It would most likely be a sacrifice to the battery capacity.

Unfortunately it's a tight rope walk of figuring out the best balancing act of what's possible in each form factor.

You're 100% on the money there, the base S22 makes a compelling case at it's price-point and absolutely that it is more fair to compare the 13/13 Pro to the S22/S22+ (which also have the LTPO screens with 10-120hz HRR, just not 1-120hz like the U!) and I guess that is to my point: not so much about direct feature comparison between the two series, but more about the structure of their respective line-ups.

Really, it's news to no-one that it speaks to their respective strategies at this point: Apple's lineup is mature, but is predictable and slow to innovate/change, whereas is Samsung innovating faster, but their lineup often feels confused, like they are just chucking everything at the wall to see what sticks. I think the Note worked better as a completely separate series, but they really just needed to dial it up a notch (hyuck!) to better separate the two ie. play more into the Note's more productivity and mature focused approach with enterprise feature-sets, and leave the S series to the consumers with more wacky and cool features.

But I don't run multi-billion dollar companies, so what do I know! Anywho, enough digression; for anyone coming from a 4/5 generation old phone like heavenlywild, it will absolutely be an upgrade.

The galaxy fold is being marketed at the productivity market

Im not the target but I had a play with it at the store and it didn't impress me

That's a fair point and then the lineup actually starts to make sense.

Get 3 bites of the pie: Keep the Note around for the mature tech focus, S line for the mass market consumer, and foldables for the bleeding edge tech nerds or hyper productivity focused.

I had completely forgotten about the foldables market for a second there, doy! And to add insult, I had considered a Flip3 previously, but ultimately features-wise it was no different to my S20+ apart from the obvious. What a dummy!

I love my Fold.  Having sold my S21 last week I've been forced into using my fold a lot more, and it's fantastic.  Both as a producitvity device and a media consumption device.  For the latter it's a very practical device that gives you a bigger window into the online world, but can still fold in half and fit in your pocket.

My god Samsung's store are just the worst to deal with. I've just spent half an hour explaining to the only call centre they have the situation my order is now in purely because the customer experience for the store on anything other than a standard order journey is utter garbage. I've requested a call back and been told it probably won't happen but the case notes are being escalated to a supervisor of that call centre to forward to the store.

I've never really seen this happen before but at one point I had two orders in to sort my problem out as per Samsung's instructions, they were there in black and white in my credit card but now nothing, vanished, gone like they never existed. I requested one be cancelled to pursue the second correct order which Samsung cancelled on their own volition. Emailed the store a few times saying what is happening and apparently both were cancelled, one still says processing online but the card payment vanished today

My recommendation for anyone with an order in considering amending it or placing another for a different bundle is just don't go down this avenue it's just not worth it. The store only responds to emails with no direct contact for us or even the samsung call centre, and even then they don't actually respond to the email and just cancel things expecting you to know it's happened. Genuinely amazed that you spend $1500 on a premium product frk. The manufacturer and their customer experience is this bad.

OEM Screen Protector available on Samsung website to preorder. S22 and S22+ only, no S22 Ultra.

https://www.samsung.com/nz/mobile-accessories/galaxy-s22plus-screen-protector-transparent-ef-us906ctegww/

$25, $12.50 on EPP store. Not badly priced and their blurb assures the fingerprint sensor is not affected by their protector.

Just ordered for the S22+

Apparently Samsung originally implied S22 & S22+ had LTPO displays, however it was noted they updated the spec sheet on their own website a few days ago, and S22 & S22+ are now listed as having AMOLED 48hz-120hz displays. Link. So now it seems that only the Ultra has an LTPO display. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung stuffed up and put the wrong info on their own website, or at least fingers crossed for that anyway.

Yes the customer service is painful, but you can get round the issue of Samsung accidentally cancelling the wrong order, by either creating a 2nd account and cancelling the order under the 1st account (thats what I did, and I didn’t give Samsung reps the details of my 2nd account so that they couldn’t accidentally cancel the new order), or, login online and select the order yourself and cancel it, because email instructions can be misinterpreted.

I'm on my third order on a second account and having used the CNY code that has now expired and one of the items being out of stock I can't actually place a like for like order. My first was a order what was in stock that I cancelled when Mondays restock happened, then the mistake I made was making a new account without rewards for the second order.

I've been on the phone another hour talking to a supervisor who again is just emailing the estore team. The real crux of the problem is the estore team is beyond contact, a 2 minute call on Monday would have averted all of my problems but now I've wasted hours of the support centres time and mine. I feel for the guys I talked to as they were actually helpful and nice at least hearing out the problem and making detailed case notes, but then it just gets emailed to the estore team who ignore it again. My case has been escalated up apparently but the store team don't do weekends so I won't be getting a resolution anytime soon. I just can't comprehend how you can operate the biggest selling phone brand in the world but not have even an internal phone numbers for a national arm of your store to escalate an irate customer to. I get we are a small population but a 5 minute call to the right department would save them 4 man hours of complaints handling.

I would buy it in a heart beat if the pen was in body. I use the snote app all day for work and have a couple of thousand files in there. My other concern is long term dust ingress.
