There is a sale at pbtech on friday (Black friday sale).  Instore only however from 4pm - 9pm (I know instore only sucks).

Shops close at 3pm and reopen at 4pm

Don't expect a discount on the pixel however

No Pixel phones but they are selling the 5X and 6p for good prices. I could be tempted.

I would have been more than tempted but its in store only Cant blame them the idea is standard retail policy. Get you in the store so you will buy more than the loss leaders.

The pixel is actually on sale for $1075 from $1248. I am trying to grab one right now 32gb of the standard pixel and only 4 units are available at queen st branch. Hopefully I will get lucky as there are a lot of people on the line.

One point with the Pixel XL that helps to make the price a bit more palatable for me..................

Due to very poor signal at home I have a Vodafone Sure Signal. Although the s/s signal is much stronger than the distant 4g signal, both my previous phones would hold on to that weak signal if I had 4g recommended as the setting. This meant at home I had to switch to 3g and then remember to switch to 4g when going out, a major pain.

The new phone, with 4g set as the recommended, happily locks in to the 3g Sure Signal and then changes over to 4g as I move away from  home as it should, at last !

I'll be a bit miffed if they have a sale on the Pixels, considering I'm still waiting for my XL black 128gb to arrive D;

Highly doubt it, they are just too expensive at the moment, small chance of a sale end of the year on them.

I wish Google would hurry up and release the phone on their online store in New Zealand. If I'm gonna pay $1600 for a phone I want the option to have it replaced instantly in the possibility of a warranty claim.
Sounds like that might not be until next year given how the Google Store in other regions have the 128GB Quite Black XL back-ordered for weeks..

I guess they probably overstocked the various carrier stores around the world, in order to get the phone in front of the average consumer. All the forums and reddit threads I've looked at state people can walk into a Verizon (USA) or Telstra (AU) store and buy most models immediately, but buying from the Google Store in those respective countries all show 'out of stock' or pre-order with huge wait times.

Ok, so I have now seen the Pixel in the flesh in JB in Melbourne.

Thoughts:

  • It does feel premium in hand. But no more premium than the Huawei P9 that JB were selling for AU$400 cheaper.
  • I don't get the glass on the back. If it is purely a design point of difference, it is a fail. An all metal phone would have been better IMHO
  • I like the new Pixel UI. It is fast and clean. The app drawer from the bottom works well. Some people don't like it, but I think it is a definite improvement over previous Nexus UI.
  • Damn that thing is lightning fast!
  • Before seeing in flesh, I would have gone for the XL. But now I have played with both, I prefer the smaller size.
  • Yep, that chin. It's too big. Why no speaker down there at least?

I think next year's iteration with smaller bezels and waterproofing will make this more of a contender (both those changes will be made).

But, if I had been buying today, it would have been the HTC 10 that I would have parted money for. Also, first time in the flesh ... and I love it!

Hey guys, serious apologies for the delay on the 128GB black XL units - the supplier didn't tell us they were unable to fulfil the order on time until the shipment failed to arrive when scheduled. They're in massive global demand right now and will be coming in bit by bit rather than the bulk order we were expecting.

All customers who pre-ordered the 128GB black XL should have been emailed with options by now. If anyone hasn't been contacted, please let me know.

This is weird, using Google Assistant, no matter how careful I am in pronouncing "Start" it always interprets it as "Stop". "Part" comes back as "pop" Anyone else see this or is it just our kiwi accent doing this ?

I read this which suggests there is a way to fine tune it's recognition

Admittedly, it's an old article but there should be an equivalent feature now.

Just received this response from JB hi-fi about availability;

"At this point in time there are no plans at all for Spark, our Telco provider, to bring the Google Pixel into NZ.

Unfortunately it seems very unlikely we will be getting it."

Hopefully their (current) information is incorrect...

It's correct. Last I heard, Google gave the Pixel exclusively to Telstra for Australasia, so no wider NZ release is on the cards unless they decide to launch it on the NZ Google store.

Pricey as they are, PB brought them in anyway because the alternative was no Pixels in NZ full stop.

I hear you man, I honestly don't even think you guys price them unreasonably (I imagine if the Google Store in NZ stocked them they'd be priced almost identically, not to mention the equivalent storage/size iPhone is basically the same price).

My biggest worries are;

-I would much rather have a RoW device than a US model at this point.

-I'd love to have the option of Advanced RMA Warranty, and as far as I understand it, no NZ retailer is obliged to swap the device for a new one - and realistically can take up to (but not limited) to 30 days to assess and repair a device?

-I don't imagine any NZ retailer will offer 'exceptions' to out of warranty cases like Google sometimes seems to offer (like from https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/5gpyg0/google_service_is_amazing/)

I totally understand the last two points are not always going to be a given, and the last point is probably a pretty rare case.
