m2geek:

bcoxy:

Hey there, had my Pixel 7 about a week now and just learning my way around it.

This morning it reminded me that Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey is out in NZ today (I'm not sure how it got the idea I'd be interested in that to be honest lol). The other day it had a much more useful reminder that I didn't set and now I'm wondering how I can customize this or view in advance reminders it has set for me?

Thanks in advance.

If you use the chrome browser or any/many google services it should/would learn what you're interested in and such - and recommendation things should/will get better. From memory there is also a "training" thing in the Assistant (or Google) app and you can tell it what subjects/media you're interested in getting recommendations for.

Another way of customizing this:

Go to the news screen (left from the home screen) tap on your picture in upper right corner, select Setting/Personalization/MAnage your interests

Considering grabbing either a 7 or 7a but would just like to summarise the current functionality with someone who has one. Been reading through the thread but little bit hard to keep track of who is using origial settings, vs the tweaks/patch.

Is any one using these on Kogan?

If so what is the status of the following on unmodified firmware, or do they need tweaks to get working? Also Kogan vs One, 2D or Spark?

VoLTE

VoWifi

5G

Thanks!

Spark and vf have volte working now.

No vowifi on spark or vf.

5g working in beta release, not on stable release, so assume 1 or 2 or 3 months away from stable release.

I would say if you want the best functionaly use a host Telco like spark or vf, stay away from the mvno operators like skinny or kogan.

I am surprised that you say 5G is not working and stay away from Skinny.

Skinny is operated by Spark and I have 5G and VoLTE working on my 6Pro since the April stable release.

are you sure? yes 5g shows avalalbe in settings but it wont connect to a cell tower using 5g on the current release.

are you sure you have connected to 5g and am on stable firmware? that would be news to me as i have a both one nz/vf and spark sim in my pixel 7 pro and still can not get 5g on either network, i have had it briefly on the april beta release, but rolled back to stable due to too many bugs.

I definitely had 5G in Christchurch Central after the April release but I haven't been back there to check since the May release.

As 06/06/23, my pixel 7(GVU6C) which running Andriod 14 beta.

Both One NZ and 2 Degrees are showing 5g network and did speed tests. Both carriers can reach download around 90mb and upload around 10 MB.

They are on par with my iPhone 5g with One NZ at the same location, only weird thing is speed test shows its LTE icon instead of 5g.

Tested again this morning, definitely 5g speed. The icon of LTE was a glitch.

Under the hood 5G NSA devices attach to LTE 4G first and then aggregates NR 5G on top of LTE. I understand only the downlink goes over 5G whereas the uplink is still 4G only. So it is sort of technically correct that the phone is attached to LTE. This practice will continue until 5G SA becomes available in NZ.

Most likely the Speedtets app hasn't been updated to detect 5G on your particular device. Android being Android probably has different ways to do that depending on the manufacturer.

Hows the stability of the android 14 beta?

Trying to understand 5G Connectivity vs Model Variant.

From the link provided earlier I've pulled together this table.

Question for people more knowledgeable about 5G than I, what variant do we want in NZ?

I read an article about Spark testing mmWave 5G, which makes me think we need variants 3 or 4.

I wonder why newer Pixel are getting 5G and VoLTE now. Google has been at this for over seven years and for over seven years they've ignored New Zealand (along with most of the rest of the world). What's changed to make them suddenly start doing what they should have been doing nearly a decade ago? Did someone go on a holiday to a country they don't sell phones in and get annoyed at the lack of 5G? Have they accidentally hired someone competent? Have they finally realised that international shipping is a thing? Pixel 8 for New Zealand?

There is an awareness that there is a large number of pixel activations in new Zealand and anyone travelling to nz should have feature parity with Samsung / iPhones

And as you said, they could be prepping a nz launch and doing the prep work for it.

The ability to use 5g is currently only available with pixel beta firmware, but we are days away from the June pixel update where it might be turned on for mainstream firmware, I will report back when I update.

I had resigned myself to a Samsung phone... it would be nice to have the option to stay with a Pixel when I replace the 4a, which is about due for replacement.
