Ouch! Parallelimported are doing them for $1245!!! That is a lot more than buying one directly from Google. Total cost to purchase direct from Google is around $800 excluding import tax, which adds around $100 to the cost, so all up approx $900. Slapping on an extra $345 is a fair whack...that's a decent mobile data plan for six months!

Thats about what CGA obligations cost in NZ - the reason that they gave for the smarter phones being proportionally more expensive than budget junk when I asked is that they have a lot more support problems with them.

THe foregn plug thing on trademe is being blown out of proportion by them. It is only supposed to apply to new devices sold by retailers, used sales via auction are always as is where is so should be exempt from the ESS requirements of safety.

They are real dicks in that they wont pull listings for unsafe plug adapters on their own, but will if its with a device with a foregn plug on it. I can see their point since there is no way you should use a travel adapter and a foregn plug if you have kids - even the approved travel adapters will fail the finger test with most US plugs.

Haven't for ones I have reported - just ignore them.

Some of them are only 2 pins on the Chinese plug side so leave things unearthed - any which will take 2 round pins and is not recessed is technically unsafe, but I don't think it matters in NZ because the euro plug standards mean nothing. The ones we ended up getting for a friends work specifically don't take the euro plugs since they don't allow for the earthed ones, but if you poke something into the UK earthing hole it will open up and you can wedge the euro plug into the 2 UK live pins. A guy at their work used to live in the UK and apparently they all do that all the time rather than getting adapters.

Anything new sold by a business trader should have a current standard compliant plug on it, there are heaps of people selling chargers with a Chinese plug on them in commercial quantities that trade me also don't seem to want to remove the listings of.

Errmm... it is for many devices, and the Nexus One has a micro-USB connector. But peope like to have a plug-in wall charger (that typically stays plugged in) to charge their phones from.

Oh how *I* long for cheap, ubiquitous, wireless charging pads - no connectors required. They've been around for a while but I'm not seeing a huge amount of momentum. Maybe Apple needs to invest in the tech to make it "trendy" to charge your iWhatever on your pulsating, glowing "iPad" ... Oh wait - scratch that, name already taken :)

I have a USB charging cable for all the phones I have - dont see what you are complaining about. Only problem one is the razr where it cant function as a data cable, so have to have a data cable too.

Standard is fine, ONLY is not. Many users don't have PC's that are on all the time or indeed have PC's so making USB charging the only way is a bit restrictive.

There is a plethora of USB wall adapters available from cheap junk for US$60c in quantity to good ones like apple sell for with iPods.

I get sick of getting yet another wallwart with every phone I buy. Sure, with the nokias it was useful till they changed the plug size and all the old ones became useless, now they have a microusb on the wallwart so its only good for a phone.

I would rather see a USB charging cable in the box, and the wall wart being a seperate item to purchase.

I disagree, I like having wall warts supplied and find them useful. I agree with your sentiment on "yet another [different type of] wall wart", however but would gladly get "yet another wall wart" if they were standardised, and particularly if the cable was a less significant part of them! One for the kitchen, one for the bedroom, one for the office - so long as I could charge all my devices using the one type of wall wart. The "USB Socket" type chargers (a'la iPhone and cheaper variants) are a good step towards that goal, but while devices keep coming out with new connectors it means having a USB cable or adpaters for each device and at each wall wart, or lugging around cables with you - which defeats any standardisation benefits for my purposes. Step up charging pads.

Anyway, it seems we've drifted OT - the charger topic could do with another thread, but it's probably already been thrashed to death in the past.

charging pads that use magnetic transfer have a whole load of issues, the ones that have rows of contacts also need things on the back of the device to connect to them.

IMO cables are the way to go, if wall warts are eliminated in box, thats the last hurdle of internationalization resolved. While many parallel importers are getting away with selling foregn goods at the moment, that will probably come to an end soon as they start to get the hard word about the plugs on the chargers.

You guys know of any good pdf readers. Especially if it scales text only pdfs, so that you only have to scroll down and if it automatically bookmarks the last viewed page before closing.

You can buy a mains to USB power adapter at DSE for about $15. I have one...and carry it with me in my bag. This one adaptor can handle USB cables for my phone and my iPod Touch. In effect one adaptor for more than one appliance (though can power only one at a time, of course).

Repligo reader is a good PDF viewer for Android. It's a paid app, but many of the best apps are paid apps and they cost so little I don't even think about it.

Hi guys! Ordered my nexus one and its with my brother now from Baltimore. Now the thing is i didnt realize Fedex is so expensive. Can anyone tell me which shipping company to use? Safe and possibly with insurance. Doesnt have to be fast fast.. Thanks in advance!!!
