It's ok, but if it's your daily phone, don't.

kradnz:

Trying to understand 5G Connectivity vs Model Variant.

From the link provided earlier I've pulled together this table.

Question for people more knowledgeable about 5G than I, what variant do we want in NZ?

I read an article about Spark testing mmWave 5G, which makes me think we need variants 3 or 4.

Can you expand on this comment please?  What do you mean exactly?

If it is your daily driver and you need your phone to be stable and to work more or less without issue; Example, if you work in an on-call situation and expect your phone to ring - don't use the beta.

FWIW I think this is probably one of the least stable Android betas I've tried. Lots of annoying glitches.

The latest patch release seems to have cleared up a lot of UI issues but the biggest thing right now is that my Camera app doesn't work properly.

I basically can't take photos now which is almost a deal breaker for me. I am hoping the devs fix it promptly but it's already been a few days 😬

Hopefully this helps @kradnz

Thanks @djjosheenz lots of good info there.

My take away from your comments is that the hardware is ok, but the software is letting things down.

Its disappointing to hear but at least it can be fixed.

I had a the camera issues on Android 14 beta 2. Todays Android 14 beta 3 seems to have fixed the issue for me thankfully. I found 14 beta 1 to be almost unusable (so I went back to the Android 13 QPR3 builds). I dove in again with the Android 14 beta 2 build and thankfully I have managed to have a relatively stable and functioning phone since then. It's not perfect, but it's workable. Never had any issues with the phone not ringing, but if I had stuck with 14 beta 1, I may well have encountered that.

Apparently the fingerprint sensor is a bit crap?

What do you guys think?

Only time I have issues with mine is outdoors in direct sunlight (especially during summer) - which isn't surprising given that it's an optical sensor.

Having dry hands can also upset optical ones it seems, but I don't have that problem.

I can't speak to the Pixel 7 sensor, but my hands are a bit on the dry side and I never like in-screen fingerprint readers. The S22 one isn't too bad, better than the older ones. The hardware ones like the Pixel 4a are perfect and super fast. My wife says on the S22 she uses face unlock most of the time anyway. Either way, newer phones seem slower to unlock than older phones, just so marketing can say they have a new feature, even if the new feature is inferior to the old feature.

the dry hands/finger issue can be fixed with your forehead usually hahaha.

The Samsung S22/S23 use a ultrasonic one so it's in a different league. I sometimes miss my Poco F3's sensor which was on the power button, but it was So fast that it unlocked trying to put it away if your finger/thumb touched the button lol. I also have Face unlock set up on my P7P, so that + finger + pin - i'm covered.

Used both the 6 and the 7 pro. Zero issues on both. Just make sure you register your fingerprint properly when you set it up and it's good!

With a tempered glass screen protector it's ever so slightly slower but it's not as bad as how people online have reacted to it...

6a here . . . zero issues with the fingerprint scanner.
I actually think it is pretty good.

7Pro here on Beta 3 as of yesterday. Here are my thoughts on the beta and the topic above

The fingerprint sensor is fine 95% of the time for me. Occasionally it'll get confused if I've got a damp finger or the screen has rain on it, or my print is faded due to too much time in the sea/pool or whatever. It can also be a bit blinding if you're in a dark room and don't use your thumb and lay it flat, this covering the whole sensor and preventing temporary blindness haha.

For the Beta:
- I'm on 2Degrees and have never had 5G... Until now! It is working and it stays on 5G for calls, which it didn't before on 4G, it always dropped back to H+.
- the sharing function is a little tricky which some apps and won't work, but that's edge case messaging apps, all the normal stuff appears to work.
- it's pretty stable from my 24 hours on my main device no real major bugs but I haven't done too much yet.
- the lockscreen customisation on Pixel is pretty sick, so nice to have a change.
- overall things look pretty good but your mileage may vary!

Also following up. I spoke too soon in my last post as Beta 3 became available hours later.

Happy to report camera issues have gone away.

So far so good for everything else :)

Still trying very hard to resist the urge to try the 14 Beta3 lol.

Especially since still waiting for the June feature update.
