I have good luck with USPS global priority mail 11 dollars. Add a few extra dollars for insurance and you get it in about a week.

No I didn't because I bought the N1 when I was there. But I regularly get packages from the US and the small flate rat box is fine or if your friend stuffs it in a smaller box, it won't be much more expensive since it's quite light. Just don't use the large box Google shipped it in.

If NZ Post don't charge GST on it (guess it depends on how much your friend declares it for!) then it usually just comes to the door as a regular mail package occasionally CourierPost deliver it. I have yet to pay duty on any package that comes via USPS so I don't know what would happen if that arose.

Let's assume the box and phone weigh no more than 2lb which is generous. And the box your friend puts it is has dimensions which do not exceed Max. length 24", max length, height and depth (thickness) combined 36"
which again is ample for a phone and docking station (that is basically a cube of 30cm each side) . Then the USPS charge is US$16.99 for priority mail. If it's 1lb 8oz then it's $13.65.

I won't speak about customs declaration Wink

twobikes: On another note now a few of us have got our N1's does anyone (maybe jamesyb0i), want to write a definitive post step by step on How to get a nexus one via say shipito, with tips like how to avoid state sales tax when ordering and what to put on customs declaration etc. to minimise total cost of phone.

I'd be keen for a bit of a guide if you guys have time. I have read this full thread and I think I have the whole procedure using shipto figured but tips on avoiding sales tax and customs would be good.
I am thinking of getting one in the next week or so as my company is moving from XT to Voda and get to keep my Touch Pro 2 to sell plus will have a brand new iPhone 3GS to well and truely cover my costs of getting a N1.

I'll try I guess..

First you set up your shipito account (i'd go for a nevada based company cos there's no state tax there)
put the address it has given you into your google checkout details and go to google.com/phone with an ip proxy or program such as hotspot shield (otherwise you can't buy it). sometimes you get sales tax, sometimes you don't.... I dunno. if you want to order more than one, repeat the process straight after.
you'll get an email saying shipito has received an item(s), you'll have to verify your account if you haven't already done so, a screenshot of the google receipt or checkout page and some other scanned ID's should do the trick. pay for the storage, choose the address to ship to, declare the customs value*, include any special instructions**. if you order more than one you can combine the packages, this costs $10usd to upgrade your account for a month, it saves on shipping but you also have to pay them to consolidate the packages etc. usps express is fine for shipping, insurance is pretty cheap, again these options on shipito page. once it's sent you can follow the progress on usps tracking page with the number they give you. within 8 days you should have received your n1 (if you live in auckland at least...)

Depending on the exchange rates you should expect to pay around $860NZD***

* - Declaring customs value is a mystery to me, you can under declare things to avoid import tax, missing out on full insurance. But you should always declare the real value and pay the tax, guaranteeing full insurance and keeping out of trouble..

** - you can have them remove the Google receipt(s) with special instructions, costs $8.50USD and they might not even do it

*** - also depending on if you pay all or some taxes

You can also ask shipito to buy it for you and they can have it sent to their nevada address, though they do take a slice off the top

My mate got an N1 (note he has an iphone), plugged it in to charge it, after 12 hours complained it still was not working. After looking at it I pointed out to him you had to put the frigging battery into the phone to charge it. iphone users please spare me! He just assumed battery was built in, also told him he had to put a sim card in as well, and that he could add memory, and operate more than one program at a time.

Now this button does what? whoops!

All ordered. Found a couple Nevada shipping companies but decided to stick to shipito since everyone else has had success with them. Didnt want to jinx it.

helicrew: Got my Google account activated after sending them the required docs, off to read the N1 thread then back to placing the order again!

I just got the "Suspended" email, have sent in the docs. How long did it take to activate the account Helicrew?

Only a couple of days from memory. Did you do the "fix" on the US post code so you were not required to pay the US tax?

Yeah I did and it didnt seem to work.
When it asked for the state I put in Calafornia and it added the tax, so I tried Nevada but it didnt accept the post code. In the end I gave up and just paid the tax.

Did you put into Google Checkout when you registered different delivery address the zip code 90503-3806, this worked for everyone I know who has done it. If fact I ordered two phones last week and it worked. It has to be the 9 digit hyphenated code NOT the 5 digit one.
