mentor:DarkVader: Got my news from Clove that my order was despatched today. SO now resisting the temptation to F5 the royal mail website to track its merry progress south towards customs. Do any of you lucky types who have this phone already in your hands have any tips on getting it configured to work with vodafone NZ etc
Also is there any speedtests on the new LTE speeds in the main centres and can this phone take advantage of that yet?
I've got my Desire HD on Vodafone. The APN settings are:
Name: Vodafone NZ
APN: www.vodafone.net.nz
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 530
MNC: 01
Authentication Type: None
APN type: default
All other settings are
You'll love this phone. Good luck with customs and GST
Dingbatt: I'm a little confused about the Navigation app that comes with the DHD. It seems to allow you to cache maps and navigate off-line.
But with the current Google Maps-Navigation setup android requires a data connection to get driving instructions and act like an in-car GPS.
Is the new navigation different?
If it is more like Oki-Maps, do you have to pay a subscription?
And does it work in NZ?
If it is subsription only, can you still use the 'free' GoogleMaps-Navigation Apps on the DHD?
DarkVader:
Thanks heaps my friend. Will let you know how badly they ping me...or not, cheers

I have got my Gmail (Push), Work email (Exchange Push) and my HTC friend stream running all the time and I haven't managed to go over 50 MB yet. It's been almost 3 weeks now so very impressed with my data usage.
I reckon you'll be fine unless you are using your DHD to download torrents :)

DHD comes with two types of maps. One is standard google maps which requires a data connection. The second is HTC Locations which is a mapping app provided by HTC. You can download maps for almost most countries completely free. These are based on TomTom maps. However, for navigation (turn by turn voice directions) you will need to purchase "premium navigation" from HTC for the different country maps.
I have purchased a 1 year subscription for NZ maps and been using it for 2 weeks now. Let me tell you the routing is bloody awesome. I compared this to Garmin (have a carpc with Garmin mobile PC) and the route algorithm is pretty spot on. Tried confusing it by driving into no exit lanes and u turns and to my surprise the recalculated route was on my screen in seconds!
The cost of premium navigation is very well structured. You can get it for 30 days, 1 year or Life time. Compared to other android mapping apps (Sygic), the pricing is very sharp.
Overall IMO the best phone I've ever owned! HTC have nailed it this time, would have been nice if they included a super AMOLED screen though but I'm not complaining.

Dingbatt:
Thanks for clarifying that. Are you able to reveal how much you had to part with for your one year subscription? I only have a casual requirement for nav.
I am trying to decide between this phone and a Samsung Galaxy Tab.

jords12: Also - when it comes into NZ you will be able to track the shipment on the NZ Post website, just use the same number as the royal mail one. Once it comes up on their site it's usually a day or two until it arrives.
Dingbatt: For the amount I would use it I would probably stick with Maps-Navigation for turn by turn and live with the data usage. Downloadable maps would be useful though.

You can still use HTC Locations for navigation which gives you directions (ticker at the bottom of the screen) and is completely free without the need for data connection. I'm not sure if it automatically updates the next set of directions based on your current location. I'd assume it would but I haven't tested this yet.
