ALTRON: Stationary warehouse have the 5x for $679
I'm considering purchasing.
Question - the model they're selling is the correct model for band 28 spark users right?

I so wanted to take advantage of this special offer
But in the end I keep on telling myself that my Nexus 4 is just fine - all I need is a portable battery for when I next go overseas.
And looking at Trademe, I can get a Nexus 5 for $450 if something should happen to the N4 ...

yeah my Nexus 4 is also just fine... :)

although I regretted not buying Nexus 6 at US$199 before Xmas, my new track pants could hold it just fine.

if something should happen to my N4 and nothing else on special, I might grab a Moto G gen 3 and later pass it on.

$679.00 was too good a price to pass up for a phone this good, so i picked one up to replace my aging nexus 4. Last day today at this price. Couldn't by a case or screen protector though, PB Tech closed today. Anyone know anywhere else that sells them? Noel Leeming had none

It's about how the spectrum in a given band is carved up vs. what the device's radios are geared for.

If you take a look at, for example, the US band plan for '700MHz', they have 3 (Or more) LTE bands that fall into this space (12, 13, & 17 from memory), with A, B, and C blocks - note that this means an LTE 'band' does not necessarily equate to 'anything within a given 100MHz frequency range'. With the more sensible APAC band plan, you take 100MHz of contiguous spectrum in the 700 space, add in reasonable guard bands to prevent overlap, and carve it up (The LTE specification allows for 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20MHz blocks).
Half of these blocks of spectrum will naturally be in the higher-frequency 'upper' half of the band, and half in the lower-frequency half of the band. See the RSM page on the 700MHz auction for further details.

It is entirely possible for a given device to only support the upper or lower half of a given 100MHz chunk of spectrum, or less, as it would if it only supported one or two of US LTE bands 12/13/17. The Nokia Lumia 830 sold in NZ, for example, also only supports Spark's half of band 28. Thankfully this hasn't been widespread - so far.

In this case, I understand it was due to the overarching desire to have as few SKUs as possible - world phone syndrome on a budget. When factoring in all the overlap in the 700MHz space from all of the US banding, there wasn't enough 'room' in the 5X to support the full spread of band 28. This is just a side effect of market prioritisation.

The Nexus 6 and 6P as sold in NZ do not have this limitation and support the full band.

As for how you know, look at which telco is selling it and what they claim about it. Note that Spark ranged the 830 as an exclusive. If it's not being ranged by a telco... Caveat emptor.

*It is BAU for all upcoming devices to be shopped around all network operators regardless of ranging decisions.

I read through the earlier discussion in this topic but unfortunately I still do not fully understand the practical consequences of this issue.

I am with Vodafone. In simple terms I would like to know what functions of the phone I will lose and in which areas of the country.

I'm guessing this means on Vodafone I will lose LTE in some but not all parts of NZ. But I'm clueless as to how I might figure that out.

Finally joined the 5X club. Replaced my lumia 640XL with one over the weekend. It is a great device. I really like it. The quality of the phone is really good and I am finally back to having a phone I can use one handed. The battery is OK, but I was spoiled by the 640 XL battery which would not die no matter how much it was used throughout the day.

Only thing I didn't enjoy was the update process. A 7 MB security update shouldn't take 10-15 mins to install. It took a good few hours to work through them all. Either that or they should be cumulative so the latest one holds all the changes.

Overall I really like it and I am stoked to have an android that will actually get updates after having too many Huawei phones.

Have had my 5X for a few weeks now and really like it a big step up from my old S4.

I got the 16gb version for $443 from einfo got the H791 which from what I could work out was the international version

4g works in the same places my S4 did so I am happy.

I found my Nexus 6 won't fit in a Google Cardboard VR headset. But it's the only Nexus phone I have.

So yesterday I bought a Nexus 5x. Awesome phone. I also have a SGS7...and that's an awesome phone, too.....but Samsung has never yet - even once - upgraded the Android on any Samsung phone I have ever owned: (Galaxy S, S2, S4, S6).

To make myself feel better about that I always have a Nexus model as my "backup"....and since my N6 is going on TradeMe for the incredible hulk that it is.....I wanted the N5x. I didn't buy an N6P because it also is a hulk.....just too big.

I didn't enable the encryption on the N5x. I assumed it would just slow the device down and the NSA / GCSB already have access to all of it anyway.

Not if you don't set up any screen locks - like pin or swipe or fingerprint.

If you leave it such that a simple swipe opens the phone, then it doesn't encrypt the phone.

Encryption is a Marshmallow (Android 6) feature, I think.
