DoggNZ: Hmm....on my SII (with Automatic Brightness unticked), I could pull down the status bar slightly and move to the left to go darker and right to go brighter. However, since I installed a custom ROM the day I got it, I can't remember if it's a stock feature or not? Reason I'm asking is because it doesn't seem to work on the SIII?

I don't own an S2 but I'm sure I've read somewhere that it had this feature because a few articles I've read have said that Samsung removed it for the S3.

Disable your auto screen brightness in the setting.

Place your finger on the notification bar and hold. Move it to the left will low down the brightness and move to the right will increase the brightness.

Though this isn't working with the Galaxy S3. Samsung decided to take it away because it hardly being used. It is a feature built in to TouchWiz 4.5 on S2.

You don't need to do anything when you're on Vodafone/2Degrees.

Only disabled it if you're on Telecom.

Remember you only need to disable it if you are on Telecom and didn't purchase your phone from Telecom.

It was built into S2 TouchWiz framework. So any launcher can take advantage of this feature.

TouchWiz is not just the launcher alone. It is far more integrated into the OS itself. That is including Swipe left and right (Call/SMS), panning and many other sensors features. The feature is cool but may be only a small number people know how to use it lol.

OK - from my re-reading of the xda thread it seems some other ICS phones (HTC) have had this "feature" worked around in their firmwares (in the same way the http authentication "feature" is not present when the android downloader is bypassed). I'm hoping Samsung/xda developers will similarly work around this for the S3 without breaking app compatibilty and performance. Perhaps that's what they're afraid of.

It's frustrating to encounter such questionably imposed limitations in android. Don't get me wrong - I'd be FAR more frustrated by the closed ecosystem of Apple, but it's the little things when so close to a seamless experience that frustrate most.

I'm on 4.1.2 and Settings gives three tabs. Maybe use a different apk?

I was a bit reluctant to try a newer version because I've already registered for a Samsung account and said I was in NZ and I can't be bothered setting up another account just to get the latest version. I think I'll stick to Google Navigation which has never steered me wrong before (I've used it all over the UK and the North Island). It will be especially good when they let you cache a whole country.

Setting > Navigation > Show POIs > untick those POIs
