Friend ended up with a "hyundai" one from some website. Seemed a lot better build than the dirt cheap tablets that every man and his dog is peddling on trademe for a huge markup from the price on DX etc. Did what they wanted to have it do fine without any massively standing out performance issues.

But after using all the android tablets I have to say the user interface speed is just trash compared to even the old iPad - things judder and stuff, little pauses between actions etc. Hopefully jellybean makes them usable but lag and judder that is tollerable on a phone certainly isnt on a larger screen.

Wade: Ipad mini is rumored to be same resolution as ipad 1 & 2 so throw in the dual core proc and fragmentation is a none issue, small screen but same resolution

There is quite a bit of speculation about the smaller ipad, so I think there is quite a high probablility there will be something. I wonder what the future will be for the ipod touch, as it hasn't been updated for a few years. Maybe that will be turned into the ipad mini with a bigger screen, as that is sort of what it is already. I can see this being a turning point for apples mobile products, as they are now lagging behind, so they need some good new products..

"If you want a phone, buy the iPhone. If you want a tablet buy the iPad. Anything else is fragmentation and increases manufacturing and marketing effort for a diminishing return"

Regardless of anyones personal ideas about this - more or less this has been SJ's and Apple's 'keep it simple' philosophy applied to design and marketing for some time.

As much as I want a half-size iPhone - last year's rumor - or a half sized iPad (actually not) I'm pretty sure SJ left strong ideas about this kind of product fragmentation for better or worse. Screen size does change things.

A widescreen iPhone is going to cause a lot more fragmentation than a smaller iPad based on existing hardware... I wonder how many developers are gonna be pissed about having to make widescreen assets, unless of course they have Android versions which they can grab files from

People are picking them up for $120 US too. Def better specs than the one I posted too. Might look more into that!

The Huawei MediaPad is a very nice wee tablet, and was selling for $250 from the Warehouse a couple of weeks ago (they've sold out but worth keeping an eye out for it at similar prices, ICS, superb build materials and quality, great 1280x800 IPS panel that is better than the Nexus 7 panel, same dated-but-respectable dualcore SoC that powers the HTC Sensation).

The Hauwei Mediapad at $250 was a steal (and don't forget the 3G capability which is uncommon and often commands a huge premium)

I've got one of those cheap no name 7" 1.2Ghz, capacitive screen, Android 4 tablets. Cost me about $140. Battery life is ok. Screen response is ok (5 point multitouch) but not as bright as an IPS screen.

The charger connector is really flimsy and no LED indicating its charging

Its got Android Market but heaps of apps won't install (viber, facebook, trademe and the list goes on). Says its not a supported device. I can get some of the apps to install if I manually install it but then it won't update.

It was something for me to play around with but I've decided I have no room for a tablet between my smartphone (galaxy S3), netbook, and desktop PC.

My S3 is pretty much a mini tablet anyway

I recently brought the Ainol Elf II which is the Dual core Andriod 4.0 7" tablet, brought it through Aliexpress and it arrived in about 6 days. Paid about $140 USD.

I was well impressed, its the next generation of cheap Chinese tablets, 5 point capacitive screens, it supports the 2degrees Data stick as well, just plugged it and it automatically found the network and loaded a data session, these ones run Google Play and are nice and smooth to use, battery life is pretty good at about 4 with wifi on and 6 hours with it off.

Plays all the kids games no problem and also HD video.

For the money you'll struggle to find anything better.

Sounds good. What would you say are the cons or issues?

Can't go wrong with a Ainol Novo 7 Aurora II if you are on a budget, very good little tablet for the price and highly rated by those who have actually used it. The Amlogic8726-M6 SOC is pretty impressive.

Personally thinking I'll grab a Yuandao N101 for my partner, her netbook just died.

I bought one through mobicity.co.nz for my wife. Or rather, I paid for one, and then mobicity spent the next 3 weeks stringing me along regarding the order status before telling me this morning that the item is now discontinued. By the time the purchase refund shows up on my Visa, I won't have time to get another tablet before my wife goes to Oz for a week(the tablet was supposed to be her in-flight entertainment), so I am extremely hoha right now, and gutted that I missed out ion a MediaPad altogether.

I've been looking at getting a tablet for a relative who is a rest home so he can watch video on it. The 7" tablets look tempting but given his age I think I need a 10" one (for vision's take) and so I presume my choices are not the cheap models as discussed in this thread but a Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus Transformer (I have one and like it) or possibly Acer Iconia.

A bit more than what I wanted to spend but if folks have suggestions for a lower cost (capacitive touch) 10" tablet that can play videos and have at least ICS installed, that would be useful,

Thanks
