Got it here yesterday (Saturday delivery) and I was impressed with the screen size and seeing it is already running Android 4.04.

Here is the first benchmark:

The "768MB RAM and 4GB ROM" in the release actually translates to 1024GB free storage out of the box.

Keen for more general impressions!

Build quality?
Camera quality? We know megapixels can mean nothing.
Smoothness?
Software customization, how far from stock android is it?
Screen quality?

The G300 released earlier in the year, was also initially listed at $400. It has since dropped to a normal price around $300 and has even been on a special for $240-$250 on a few occasions. I wonder how soon we will see the price drop on this model.

It seems that single core phones need at least 512MB of available RAM for a snappy user experience. This is a dual core model with just 768MB - will this be sufficient such that the user is not wishing for more?

I'm also interested to know how good (if at all) the wifi connection is on this model. I have the X5 from the previous Huawei range (running Aurora 4.1 ROM), and the only bad feature is the need to toggle the wifi off/on whenever wifi access is needed. I am hoping that this has been improved.

I haven't noticed any WiFi problem so far.

Is your problem with the original ROM or custom ROM?

I've been using DZO's custom ROM, I haven't used the original for very much. The impression I get when going through the forums at xda/modaco is that the problem is not with the ROM, more the device.

Does anyone have details on retailers who will be selling this phone on 25 October?

Also, will it work on 2 Degrees/Vodafone?

I'd also be interested on how this compares with the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus, which you can get parallel imported for only $100 more. From the benchmark posted by freitasm it looks like the G 600 was well beaten by the Galaxy S2. It looks to me if I'm looking for a big screen phone then the Galaxy Nexus, with an even bigger and better resolution screen at only $100 more would be the way to go.

Two Versions

Telecom / Voadafone Compatible- 3G: 850/1900/2100
Vodafone Only* - 3G: 900/2100

*Better version for vodafone if you only use vodafone

Galaxy S2 is a better phone, it only loses in price + screen size.

850/1900/2100 is NOT what you'd call Vodafone 'compatible'. If you are on Vodafone, get the UMTS 900/2100 model. The UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz model will not work where Vodafone only has 900MHz 3G coverage, which is quite a chunk of their network.

It still can be used on vodafone network but is not ideal, it would be fine for main centres.  This is why I wrote ideally you should use the 900 3G model.  The converse is not true and the 900 3G model is vodafone only.

I suppose I could of written Limited Vodafone Compatibility.

Not yet. Really bad weather here so I wanted to get a nice sunny view. Will do as soon as possible.

Finish is really good. The back feels nice when holding but I have to say the screen is terrible under direct sunlight. My Nokia Lumia 800 has no problems under the sun but any images on the G600 screen under the same conditions completely disappear.

Have an X5 using Aurora 4.1 ROM and don't have any issues with the wireless.

Thanks for responding. The multiple responses indicate that this is not a common problem here and after considering this a bit more, I suspect that its the office router that is the 'faulty'. I don't have this issue with the Orcon Genius router at home.

Anyway, I have noticed the DZO is in the process of updating his ROM (version 5.0 experimental is now available). Looking forward to the improved camera app.

Finally, getting back on topic before a sanction is applied to this mini-thread hi-jack: We should have a clearer picture of Vodafone/2 Degrees compatibility now that launch day has arrived.

The G300 prices dropped soon after I got my X5 - too soon to contemplate an upgrade (sidegrade as someone else mentioned). So very keen on this model, price drops should be timely.
