Just received:

Huawei is bringing its Huawei Ascend G 600 smartphone to New Zealand, offering a complete package of high-end features and performance, and signalling Huawei’s intention to provide devices across the full market range.

The Huawei Ascend G 600 is the first-dual core Huawei phone to be launched in the New Zealand market, and also sports a 4.5” qHD screen, 8-megapixel BSI camera, NFC, and Android 4.0.

“This is an exciting product for Huawei New Zealand,” says spokesman Nick Wilson.

“It is the most powerful device we have offered in this market, allowing our customers to enjoy a genuine premium smartphone experience, but also holds to Huawei’s belief that great technology should not be exclusive to those willing to part with great sums of money.”

The Huawei Ascend G 600 will launch with an RRP of $399, and will be available through Telecom NZ and participating retailers from October 25.

Huawei Chief Marketing Officer Shao Yang says the Ascend G 600 shows how far smartphone technology has come, delivering a host of specifications on a single device.

“Building on the success of the Ascend range of smartphones, the Huawei Ascend G 600 is the latest in our range of flagship products which make exceptional experiences accessible for more people.”

The Huawei Ascend G 600 also adds features such as DTS surround sound with dual microphones and dual speakers, Huawei’s fast-boot technology which enables start-up in just five seconds, and a 1930mAh Li-Polymer battery which can be fully charged in four hours.

so is this likely to be pentaband and able to work on 2 degrees/vodafone, or is only telecom going to get this one now?

At minimum it will work on Vodafone/2degrees where there's 2100 MHz 3G coverage. I am not sure about being quadband (which would support all NZ operators anyway) or even pentaband.

Looking at the phone's official page, it's hard to say whether it'll work on all networks. They list the Vodafone/2degrees bands (UMTS-1) and XT bands (UMTS-51) separately, rather than in one list as they do with GSM. This makes me think that there will probably be 2 models, one for UMTS-1 and the other for UMTS-51.

There are a couple of pages around the place talking about FCC approval for the phone, and how 3G will be limited to the UMTS-1 bands, so this tends to indicate that the NZ release will be Vodafone/2degrees only.

It looks to be good value if it does go on sale at $399 - looking at the overseas sites and the prices they were quoting (USD and Euros) It doesnt look like that price includes the usual NZ premium. ie convert the euros USD to NZD and its about the same price.

The only thing I could see that it misses is a gyroscope (apparently). Maybe that was just a pre-release model that someone was reviewing. I assume that this would mean it doesnt auto rotate the display - that would be an odd omission if that was the case.

Looks like a good battery - good size screen. Gets a tick for the OS version as well (not gingerbread!).
Even has Gorilla glass.

Will wait for your review Mauricio particularly interested in the battery life.

I cant justify an S3 - but this is about what I paid for my (now) old galaxy ace a year ago.

Press release quoted by OP states that the phone will be available by Telecom. So perhaps both versions will become available in NZ eventually.

Exactly the opposite. As noted, the release is for Telecom...

The press release shows Telecom as the only network listed for release so I very much doubt it not having 850 support.

Excellent looking phone for the $. Might be what I recommend to anyone wanting a smartphone who doesn't want an S3.

Band support is comparable to an iPhone 3G/3GS so will work on all networks, but better on Telecom, ie nationwide 3G

Telecom compatible - 850/1900/2100 vs the one better with vodafone - 900/2100

+1 for outcome.

The amount of mega pixels a camera has seems to bear little relationship to the quality of the picture especially if the subject is further away than a persons face.

FYI - bought G300 for wife which is a very good phone so this G600 seems to be a god price point for my next upgrade as I just dont see the value in SG3 or Iphone.
