I had an Aussie SGS2 and could access their playstore from a VPN. Using the same account and same VPN with a NZ phone didn't work.

However, even though I had paid for books whilst in Australia, they were blocked as soon as I got back to NZ. Wouldn't trust Google not to do the same thing to music & videos.

Access to the Play store is controlled by the SIM card used in the phone. For devices that don't have a SIM inserted (e.g. WiFi only tablets) then it probably falls back to your IP address.

I'm certain about the SIM card thing because there are apps that trick the Play store into thinking you're on another network (e.g. MarketAccess). I've used one of these before to get at a free app that's only available in the US for now.

So, will "Marketaccess: work for play store music, Amazon music etc? It would be great to have full access to all of that sort of thing. Planning on rooting a new N4 etc if it will get me access.

I'm not sure about the Amazon store. I tried the app a while back, but because I couldn't download anything I removed it. That was before I'd rooted my phone.

Chances are that Amazon are using an IP address lock, rather than you cell provider's identifier. If you can set up the device with a US VPN then you might have some luck. I'd give it a go for you, but don't have any such service to test with.

Routing the phones connection through a VPN to Australia worked fine for me.

Pain in the bum though.

Setting up the Amazon app is pretty easy, if you can find the APK and sideload it, you just need an Amazon account with a US address associated with it and login with that IIRC. Once you've done it once, it works from any regular connection from then on.

If you are using a VPN and want to bypass the SIM check just put your phone into flight mode then connect via WiFi.
