Huxtable,

Did you get a Q9000 in the end? I'm looking at getting one too. But I also need it to be 900/2100 3G as I'm a 2degrees customer.

I still haven't ordered anything.

DX did actually respond to my question ("Can you please confirm that this phone supports ALL of these 3G WDCMA frequencies as advertised: 850 / 900 / 2100?" )

... simply with: "The supplier confirmed it is correct. Best regards. "

To be honest, this response didn't really give me any more confidence... so I am still researching/looking.

It makes the devices on trademe a little mor attractive even though it'd work aout a little dearer. What ones have you liked from Trademe?

nzgeek: A7 vs A9? Ouch! Sure, you'll be able to run the same software, but changes in the underlying architecture allow the A9 to do more work with less power than the A7, and that's at the same clock speed. The Feiteng phone will only have about half the processing power, so has a good a chance of running a bit sluggish.

If you want a to put it in terms of PC processors, it's like comparing a Pentium 3 with an i7.

I agree that comparing the Feiteng to a S3 is a stretch but comparing the Feiteng to the LG P500 is valid. The specs of the Feiteng look much better than the LG P500 and maybe a worthy upgrade for the dollars.

The comparison between a Pentium 3 and an i7 is not valid either IMO.  On a PC the software has become much more bloated and graphical since the days of the Pentium 3 that you now need an i7 to run the same software.  And you typically run more than one bloated piece of s/w on a pc.  But on your mobile phone you are typically only running one app at a time.  And those apps don't seem to have become unusable. I also have an LG P500 and can still run the latest version of Google maps.

BTW Huxtable, there is a piece of s/w called int2ext (actually several that do a similar job) that move apps to your sd card. I use it on my LG P500.  It allows you to have a lot more apps on your phone.  Doesn't solve the speed issue but I am happy enough with that.

I would be interested in happy owners of a cheap chinese phone.

Just my 2 cents worth

Jiayu G4 a little bit more expensive but great value for the money, pretty high spec and benchmarks at 12000 plus with antutu.

I picked myself up a Zopo C2 Platinum/ZP980 awhile back, and I must admit that I was quite surprised at the quality of the phone for the price @ NZD350.

Which benchmark app did you use for that?

Someone on the DX forum has bought a Q9000 and says it works on 900MHz 3G.  So I've ordered one.  Will let you know what it's like when it arrives.

I like the look (and price) of the Jiayu G3S but it says 2.1GHz 3G only :-(

Oooooh! That's awesome deadlyllama... I had actually decided this afternoon that I was more than likely going to order one myself finally next week... I look forward to hearing what you think of it! And the confirmation of network compatibility.

As far as Chinese phones go - Zopo would be the cream of the crop. They also makes phones under licence for other manufacturers including LG.
Unfortunately Zopo would be of no use to the OP as all their phones are wcdma 850/2100.

nzgeek:
I'm quite surprised that they chose 850/2100 over 900/2100, as there aren't that many countries using the 850 band. The vast majority of the Asian networks are using 2100 only, and the only country that has more than one network using 850 is Thailand. Europe is almost completely 900/2100, and the US is largely 850/1900. Being dual-SIM pretty much indicates an Asian audience, but I'm not sure who their target market is.

actually, if you look down this list you will see there are quite a large number of networks using the 850mhz frequency. Other than a concentration of 900/2100 networks in Europe the 850mhz frequency appears to be much more common than 900mhz.

nzgeek: , and the only country that has more than one network using 850 is Thailand.

Obviously you missed

Aus, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay, Venezuela, Israel - all with two networks or more using 850mhz
remember, even the iphone didn't support the 900mhz frequency until the iphone 4. :-)

Looking on that DX it does say it does support 900MHz anyways

Hi mikenzb, that had been noted, although I had questioned whether this could necessarily be relied on - as different websites seem to list different networks supported, and I was concerned it may have been something lost in translation etc on these international websites.

So to hear a buyer actually confirm with a hands-on would be ideal :)
