rhysb: I've ordered one of these for my wife.
http://liliputing.com/2013/04/cube-u30gt2-quad-core-tablet-review.html

Rockchip RK3188 (Faster than Exynos 4412)
32GB
2GB RAM
10.1" 1920x1200
Android 4.1.1 (4.2 Beta available)
670g

One of the better China tabs I think.

No GPS and 670g is pretty hefty so that won't work for me sadly.

urban: It can be bought locally for around 300(probably your best bet as opposed to dealing with an offshore e-store as you will be covered by the cga if anything goes wrong).

This looks pretty sweet. Even some of the chinese phones are starting to look tempting. Do you know where I can find this tablet locally?

Picked up my Xperia Z tablet last night. Love the form factor and weight - a colleague's iPad feels like a brick in comparison. Screen is great. Only had 1 hour with tablet as want to fully charge, but based on my initial play, I am very impressed.

Battery life is average - early days to totally tell as heven't really used a lot. Charge time, however, is abysmal. Discharged battery this morning and plugged in empty at 9am. It's now 12.20pm and battery indicator shows just under half charge! Am using a blackberry phone charger, but I am picking there would be no difference between this and the Sony supplier charger.

Battery aside, I love everything else about the tablet.

There actually is quite a bit of difference between the new tablet chargers and the phone chargers.

The phone chargers usually supply charge at 1Amp (or some at 500mA). Your blackberry charger might be at 500mA.

The tablet chargers are all at 2Amps or 2.1Amps. Basically twice as fast. More current means power comes quicker.

This issue is the one that was with the iPad 3s and the iphone chargers. It was well publicised that people should use the ipad charger for the ipad and not the phone charger.

Trademe :)

There's a seller there that regularly has dollar reserve auctions for these tablets.

FYI the Spark and Firewire models are in fact the same tablet.

Look up Slatedroid, there's a small write-up about DIY modding the wifi component on it.

I reckon the specs hit the right note, pity about the lack of quality control from Ainol on certain batches of tablets they produce... that's why I suggested buying locally - just in case something goes wrong with it.

im looking for some 10" (or very abouts) tablets for home automation around the house. will be fixed to wall in custom picture frames, connected to power source.

wifi is super critical, must be good and connect easily (my samsung s3 has rubbish wifi, connects to my 5GHz wifi fine, but not my 2.4GHz one).

im considering the following
- Onda V972 (I think this has the same aspect ratio as the iPad, so no WS, which is better for photos)
- Ainol Novo 10 Hero 2
- Ainol Novo 9 Fireware/Spark (theyre the same right???)
- ASUS TF300T

the asus is nearly twice the price of those, but better specs.

The cheaper ones, often mention
- Bad wifi (though some people say they have good wifi)
- Doesn't support all the apps (this could be a problem if the home automation app I want to run isnt supported)
- Sluggish

I'm want to use daydream to turn it into a photo frame when not in use. Since im looking for about 3 of these (ill buy one for now to see how well it works etc), I don't want to get a super expensive tablet.

Any recommendations?

Yep the Spark and Firewire are indeed the same models.

And also YES re:not all apps are supported, but for the most part a third party rom fixes that problem i.e.CM10 mod etc. The tablet has been around long enough for some mature roms which fixes/tweaks most of the niggling issues(if any).

Have a good read on http://www.slatedroid.com/forum/562-ainol-novo-9-spark-firewire/

Hey Reven, My GS3 had crap 2,4GHz WiFi, but awesome 5GHz. I took it back to Samsung (via 2Degrees) and it turns out the 2.4GHz chip had burnt out slightly. They replaced mine under warranty. Now its great.

You might want to investigate ;)

Cheers

I'd recommend the Huawei Mediapad 10 FHD or the Link. They range from 280 USD to 489 USD depending on spec.

Picked up the link model for $300 NZD shipped via aliexpress through the seller Jacky He. He has a great feedback and one of the cheaper traders on there.

The FHD model has the 1080p screen and the link has a 1280 X 800 screen. The prices are similar to the cheaper Chinese tablets but the build quality is a lot higher than say Ainol, Playor, Ramus,Pipo and Cube. More on par with Samsung/Sony.

I wouldn't buy the Huawei tablets locally as retailers are selling them from $650NZD (The link) to $900NZD (FHD).

I've tried other Chinese tablets and I'm not going down that path again.

took the plunge and bout a Ainol 9 Spark/Firewire from aliexpress. About NZD$250 all up with free shipping for 16GB model.

Giving it to my son to play with, something I don't really care if he breaks it (im sure it will last him a while though), need to get him into computing :)

Also see if its good enough for home automation and if it is I'll buy some more.

Also picked up a second had TF300T with keyboard fro $380 off trademe, that was a bargain considering they cost $547 brand new without the keyboard.
