So need to get a new 10 inch tablet. Wanting something on Android rather than Apple purely for the ecosystem.

So far from what I can see the new Sony Xperia Tablet Z looks quite good. I thought it could have crap battery life but from early reviews seems pretty good.

Mainly using for web surfing, youtube and watching videos (plex). Also might do a few light games.

Is this tablet the best out, I think its due for NZ release 6th June or should I be looking at something else.

I want it to last for about 18 months so needs to still be running hardware / software that will work then.

Go check out the Ainol Firewire/Spark

2GB ram, 16GB onboard storage, Sd card slot, hdmi out and 2048x1536 IPS screen

It can be bought locally for around 300(probably your best bet as opposed to dealing with an offshore e-store as you will be covered by the cga if anything goes wrong).

Galaxy Tab 2 or Note 10.1, both very good, but a little on the pricey side

+1 for the Galaxy Tab 2. I've got one rooted and rommed running cyanogen mod and it handles most you chuck at it.

16GB for $435 on Pricespy. It's not the newest but it's still a good un.

Nexus 10 is good but aint cheap if you buy it locally. Best price is to wrangle one from Google Play store

For a cheapy, take a look at the Ramos W30HD

This might be a daft question but I am wondering if it is possible to sync email/notes/etc from outlook directly to an android tablet without having to sync things through the cloud. Are their dock style cradles that one can get for these devices to make handling/charging easier - not keen on messing around with cables.

I'm going to pick up the new Xperia. Super lightweight and much better screen resolution than the Samsung offerings (which would have been my first choice if their resolution had been better). I haven't read a bad review about the Sony. Will get the 16gb and slot in a 64gb micro SD for movies and music.

Hmm.. did you have a look at the Asus Transformer Infinity (just announced last night) running the Tegra 4 chip. This looks to be like the next top Android Tablet:

Awesome spec, but 1.3KG? That's insanity.

I've also been looking for something. I want 1900x1080+ res screen and <500 grams, or ideally <400 grams. Needs to be FAST

That is slated for a Q3/4 release I think, depending on release date may not be of much use to the OP.

The Xperia Z certainly looks nice, can't help but wonder whether now is the time to buy a 10inch Android tablet with 2500x1600 Tegra 4 tablets just around the corner though.

FWIW I was looking at the Ainol Spark last night, actually really quite respectable performance on the Allwinner A31 SoC. Would buy locally though, the quality control on those is as you would expect and I wouldn't touch them without local warranty support. Further to that I would only buy it if you're comfortable with installing custom ROMs as it sounds like the stock ones are inferior to a CM10 build. On that front I find it quite interesting its Rooted OOTB.

Is it really 1.3KG though? That's huge!

I've ordered one of these for my wife.
http://liliputing.com/2013/04/cube-u30gt2-quad-core-tablet-review.html

Rockchip RK3188 (Faster than Exynos 4412)
32GB
2GB RAM
10.1" 1920x1200
Android 4.1.1 (4.2 Beta available)
670g

One of the better China tabs I think.
