peejayw: I kind of thought us Nexus owners would be first :-(

I have the update on my Nexus 4 though. I wonder what's different?

I got the Skype update within a few hours of it being announced but that was from Microsoft :-)

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

I'm on a custom rom and had to install maps via Google Play. Although highly doubtful, I wonder if that played any part.

New maps came through a couple of days ago. Question for others with it, when you touch/click on search, does the explore card come up? Never seen it on mine, I'm presuming it doesn't work in NZ?

fallen: Not yet on either nexus 4 or nexus 7

Got them on my Nexus 4 last Friday, July 12th. No latitude now..

Got it on my S4. Not sure when though, haven't seen a map update in the last few days at least

Works fine. Looks like more tie in with earth and now.

Got it on my Note 2, I originally got a copy from Android police, but have just reinstalled from the play store and now have an official one. Looks good on the big note screen, although the half list button on the bottom left of the screen makes it look like they have mucked up the screen resolution.

Still no update on my Nexus 4, reminds me of the 4.2.3 update which took a couple of weeks after the fact..

No update on my Xperia Tipo yet either. I'm not in a rush though as I like Latitude, will be sad to see it go..

Only Latitude the name is getting removed. Location History recording (an amazingly under-sold feature - they're probably too scared to promote it) and friends-location are all still available.

Location history is part of Android now and with iOS it's part of the Search/Now app.
Friends location is now part of Google+, as is check-ins.

The new maps interface is fairly slick. Looking forward to more Waze integration.

I wish Android devs stopped mucking around with UI. Google Maps menu is a small tab on the side. Other apps is a three dots at the bottom (which also causes conflicts with HTC One for example). Other apps are three dots on top.

Arghh.

Android Design specifications advise the left-side menu slider either by the wider-left justified 3-dots (Hamburger button) or swipe from left. Previously it was just the hamburger button -> menu, this is still present in the new design spec and is usually for App settings rather than App-features.

All new Google-built Applications use this (Google+, Youtube, Play Music, Gmail, Play Store, Google Drive (etc)..) and they're encouraging all devs to use it.

Obviously from a design point of view not all apps can be exactly the same, which is why the general spec is menu on the left, with regards to the new Maps app they've gone for a full-screen experience (like the desktop Google Maps) and as such there is no top / title bar to place the Hamburger button icon on, so they've just placed it lower on the left - still following the primary design specifications. It is also worth noting on the tablet version the button is left of the search bar placing it in-line with other Apps, I guess they decided there is not enough horizontal screen real-estate for this on smaller screens.

I think the hamburger button jutting out from the side just looks tacky and is a poor design decision. It acts as a visual cue, sure, but it isn't visually appealing and is a waste of space once you learn that there is a menu on the left.
