bradstewart: The current HTC One is 4.7". With the upcoming update to the awesome Sense 6 for it, it is going be hard to find a better option.

That's pointless when the 5.2" LG G2 fits in a smaller body for a cheaper price and better specs and camera.

Look at importing the Moto X?

Yabanize: TBH, Once you get used to a 5 inch phone it isn't an issue, Try them in shops? If you're gonna spend around $700-$750 you may aswell get something like the full S4 S3 or HTC one rather than a less powerful, less features mini versions. You think 5 inch phones are too big until you have one. and when you do you cant go back   Otherwise Moto G? S3/S4 mini, HTC One Mini, iPhone

I had a Nexus 5, now on iphone 4S. I prefer the smaller form factor for pocketability, but do miss the 5" screen. Don't want to go any larger than the N5. I like the look of the upcoming Sony Z2 and HTC M8, but think these have got just too big. Problem is, there are no great mid-size handsets available locally (and I need to buy local as phone needs to come bundled with business plan).

The N5 is a great phone, and may be the best bet for the poster as it is slightly smaller than the Sony/Samsung/HTC offerings. Only complaint with N5 was battery life (though the wireless charging did take a lot of hassle out of the frequent charging).

And a terrible UI.

Moto G from Jb HiFi.  They sell it with  a white or black snapper case..  Not sure if the others do or not..

Firstly, thanks for all the replies.  As the points raised:

Apple is not for me.  I don't like being told what my phone experience should be.

I bought my daughter a Moto G and yeah its a good phone but I would like something with a bit more grunt and as I think someone else noted the camera isn't brilliant.  It is great value though.

I have seen and tried a 5" phone but I just find it too big for me.  However there really is a dearth of good phones in that smaller size.  I am down to the Sony Z1 Compact (I don't mind buying overseas and the I see Clove has dropped the price to 299 pounds), Motorola Droid Mini (thanks for that suggestion) but I am going to wait for the new HTC One M8 Mini specs to be announced.  If you believe the rumours it is due in May and will be a 4.5" screen.  I can wait another month and if its predecessor is anything to go by it should be available here in NZ.

I think this may be a bit on the small side, going by what the OP's after...

an HTC one under 5" is larger than nexus 5/s4 5"
nexus 5/s4 5" is as big as a lot of 4.5"

due to the way they make their shells ... as i said if you want a "good" (to me means high spec) phone ... well ...

Nexus or a Samsung phone I think. Their mini phones are expensive considering they're a lot less powerful than the full phones.

joker97: btw don't get the S4.

I love my S4, it works great and I love the hardware button on the front.

Good point.  In considering screen size I had not really looked at the actual size of the phone.  This makes interesting reading:

Nexus 5 5" screen 137mm x 68mm
Galaxy S4 5" 136 x 69
HTC One 4.7" 137 x 68
HTC One M8 5" 146 x 70
HTC One Mini 4.3" 132 x 63
Moto G 4.5" 129 x 65
Moto X 4.7" 129 x 65
Motorola Droid Mini 4.3 121 x 61
Sony Z1 Compact 4.3" 127 x 64
Sony Z1 5" 144 x 73 (having seen one here at work it really is big).
LG G2 Mini 4.7 129 x 66
LG G2 5.2" 138 x 70

So if I take out the HTC One M8, Sony Z1 and Droid Mini the difference in size is roughly 11mm in length and 5mm in width.

That has given me something to think about.

I stand by the LG G2. Screen vs body there isn't any better. Camera is best on that list too
