My current phone is finally reaching end of life (four years wasn't bad though) and I need to replace it.

I would like a phone that has decent specs but I do not want a 5"+ screen as that is too big for my liking but increasing screen sizes seem to be the current trend.  I would prefer something between 4 and 4.5".  The obvious candidates as far as I can tell are the Sony Z1 Compact and when released the HTC One M8 Mini but is there anything else recently released out there at that sort of level?

Cheers

Budget might help narrow the choice down.

Found out on friday that Noels are now selling the Moto G. Getting one for the wife. Great phone. Great price.

Would highly recommend the Moto G for a phone around that size.  Absolutely amazing value as long and great performance apart from the camera.

Good point.  Around $700-750 or so.

In response to the other posts I agree the Moto G is a good phone but I am after something with a few more bells and whistles.

Giggs: Sony Z1 Compact and when released the HTC One M8 Mini

Are you thinking of importing - neither of these are available locally?

AFAIK the HTC is a lower spec, smaller version, whereas the Sony is a same spec, smaller version.

I'd definitely be interested in Sony if released here. Would need a dock though, it would do my head in having to open the waterproof flap every time I wanted to charge the thing.

Ha, I know the feeling.. My Z1 came with the dock so I'm pretty happy. ;)

have you used android before? if not you should give an iphone a thought ... and if you have and still want to experiment android, take care.

i'm a fiddler hence i use an android. i can't stand the rigidity of ios. but for end user experience ios wins hands down (my wife, dad, mother who doesn't know how to operate the VCR)

horses for courses is the caveat.

TBH, Once you get used to a 5 inch phone it isnt an issue, Try them in shops?

If you're gonna spend around $700-$750 you may aswell get something like the full S4 S3 or HTC one rather than a less powerful, less features mini versions.

You think 5 inch phones are too big until you have one. and when you do you cant go back

Otherwise Moto G? S3/S4 mini, HTC One Mini, iPhone

Since the OP has posted in the "Android" area, I would imagine he was after an Android phone... ;P

nexus 5 is the answer. it is not 5+, very close to 4.99, cooks dinner and does the washing.

i just think good quality and mid sized = 5"

anything under 5" and good quality is very very hard to find ...

btw don't get the S4.

Yep, Nexus 5 would've been my first mention too, but yeah, it's 5".

There are no flagship devices (on Android) under 5" now, so your choices are limited to the 'mini' range. Or the Moto G, which stacks up pretty well against the mini's, but at a low price. So yeah, I still say the Moto G.

The current HTC One is 4.7". With the upcoming update to the awesome Sense 6 for it, it is going be hard to find a better option.
